That's illegal, unless you're so close when it changes from green to amber that it's dangerous to stop.

    And therefore not illegal.
I think that can be illegal if there are road signs and markings that say the right hand lane is not for turning left. However, I thought SHIPSHAPE was talking about when two lanes merge into one and some people look to use both lanes and merge in turn, which certainly isn't illegal.

    Still not illegal.
Needs to be hands-free, obviously. I expect SHIPSHAPE meant handheld.

    Not always.

After being hit in the rear by a fella in a van during a heavy rain shower... who 'just didnt see me'

I do put my fog light on if its very heavy or there is a lot of spray on the roads.

My thinking is 'if you seen me and are irritated......... least you have seen me!'
Please note I have a cognitive disability - as such my wording can be a bit off, muddled, misspelt or in some cases i can miss out some words totally...

    Get better tail lights.

It is nothing to do with being irritated. You are more likely to get someone hitting you up the back if you use your rear fog lights in inappropriate circumstances. The consequences are not just your car being damaged, but the other driver and the occupants of their car being at risk. Your driving behaviour is totally unacceptable.

It has often occurred to me that if the Driving Test was made much more arduous and difficult 50 years ago and failed say 90% of people we wouldn't have the problems we have today on the roads. The roads would be much more clear, accident rate would be less, insurance would be much lower, as would petrol costs because of the fewer to buy the stuff the company's selling it would have to lower their exorbitant prices. When one considers the idiots one meets in 'real life' and consider they drive cars one shudders. You've made your bed, now lie on it.
PS I don't have a car so there!!!

Only running out of fuel, which should be an offence, no excuse for it and can cause chaos.

    No excuse?

I used to live up north, and whilst away in Southampton I had all my money and cards stolen.

I had 3/4 tank of fuel and, luckily, a 5 gallon jerry can in the boot that was partially filled.

I ran out of fuel on the M42, in roadworks no less, at 11PM, filled up from the can and ran out of fuel again at the bottom of a road in Walsall where a friend of mine (who I only knew via the internet) lived who was nice enough to let me stay the night.

Luckily I was able to go online, do a bank transfer and get said friend to take out some cash for me, fill the jerry can and be on my way.

But hey, better give me a fine and/or lock me up, because there's no excuse for running out of fuel, right?

Wouldn't have made a difference, the major problem is that old saying "you learn to drive, you pass your test and then you learn to drive again" actually rings true.
Certain things in the highway code are NEVER practiced, like the correct way to turn right at 4 way traffic lights. Never practiced because they don't work in real life.

People pick up bad habits, they forget the highway code and they start forming their own highway code in their head, based on the poor driving they see around them.

They then start appointing themselves as the law, trying to enforce their own rules on everyone else. For example holding up an entire motorway by driving down the middle lane OR swerving to stop people legally overtaking on chevrons/hatch-markings OR blocking lane 2 of a dual carriageway to stop "queue jumpers".

The law needs to be clear and people should be forced to at the very least retake a comprehensive theory test every 5 years or so.
“I may not agree with you, but I will defend to the death your right to make an a** of yourself.”

    .

Nope. Not illegal. In fact some vehicles have to move over to the right to make left turns.

The HGV driving test is twice the length of time that the car one is and OTTOMH is 90 minutes. Far more time to make mistakes and ones true driving nature to come out. The failure rate is quite high. When I took my Class 1 test, I was the only person to pass that day.

    but i agree with Flyboy!

As i said in the speed limit thread; the driving tests should be changed for how people drive and not this useless way that we're taught.
