I'd fine the lot of 'em, roundabouters who don't signal, yellow box hoggers, parking on bends, double parking blocking off a whole side of road, running out of fuel, those that ignore the right of way of oncoming traffic at narrowed traffic calming roads, speeders, mobile talkers, amber gamblers, slow drivers, middle lane M way hoggers, those that want to turn left (or right) but find that lane chocablock so decide to go down the emptier lane then push in...etc etc etc

Trouble is, a lot of that is not illegal.

Only running out of fuel, which should be an offence, no excuse for it and can cause chaos.

Everything else has their own specific offence and anything else can be done for not paying due care.

The most dangerous drivers on any road are the ones who are more occupied at other peoples bad habits.

  • indicators aren't compulsary if i remember correctly. The highway code just says you 'should' use them for the benefit of others.

Driving through traffic signals at amber, turning left from the right hand lane, talking on a mobile telephone, not signalling on a roundabout, parking on a bend and driving below the speed limit. None of those are specifically illegal. ;)

Rear Fog Lights (second fog light click or seperate switch) Very bright rear red lights much brighter than brake lights. Only to be used in severe dense fog, so dense, that you notice the cars infront of you with rear lights on (but not fog lights) dissappear into the fog at 200 yards (and I mean DISSAPEAR so that there is no trace of them you truly cannot see them anymore)... The cars that have rear fogs on will be visible for much longer like 500 yards. If you can see cars without their fogs on for 500 yards or more infront then you should not be using your rear fogs. Same rule applies to very heavy rain, rain so hard you have never seen it rain so hard as this, only put your rear fogs on if you notice cars infront of you are not visible to you unless they have their fogs switched on. "Normal rain" or "normal hard rain" do not use rear fogs. Sometimes on the motorway there is rainspray when the cars kick up water back into the air creating a dense mist. Again, depending on what you see or don't see infront of you use your fogs appropriately if you can see cars infront of you off into the distance without their fogs on you do not need to put on yours. If you see cars infront dissappear into rainspray or dense fog at or below 200 yards even though they have their normal tail lights on then use your fogs.

That can be qualified a little more. Essentially the decision for rear fogs can involve two factors. The first one you've described:is the visibility poor enough to merit rear fog lights? If the answer is no, then you don't need them (and you are probably committing an offence if you switch them on). If the answer is yes, the next thing to consider is: is the driver behind me close enough that they can see me without my fog lights on (i.e. normal tail lights are sufficient)? If the answer to that is yes, then you don't need your fog lights on. If the answer the that is no (or there is no driver behind) then pop them on, but don't forget to turn them off again when someone comes up behind and they're no longer necessary.
  • Fog lights should be used when visibility is significantly reduced (100 metres) and turned off as soon as visibility improves so as not to dazzle other road users.

There are questions about this in the theory test now (did mine in August)

What bugs me is how I have had 'think bike!'rammed down my throat and then I have cyclists cut across me at traffic lights or wobble into my path because they are texting while cycling.

That's illegal, unless you're so close when it changes from green to amber that it's dangerous to stop.

turning left from the right hand lane

I think that can be illegal if there are road signs and markings that say the right hand lane is not for turning left. However, I thought SHIPSHAPE was talking about when two lanes merge into one and some people look to use both lanes and merge in turn, which certainly isn't illegal.

    talking on a mobile telephone

Needs to be hands-free, obviously. I expect SHIPSHAPE meant handheld.

I’ve done just about everything to avoid running out of fuel, such as putting £10 in at one of the most expensive petrol stations in London. Never done it, however come VERY close at times!

This happened to be in my PA’s Sharan!
