I wasn't induced with either of them :D But I've been told I have good childbearing hips so maybe that helped :D :rotfl:

Just posted in the less than 12 weeks pregnant thread but wanted some feedback from people who have given birth.

My Oh had a go at me as I said I was feeling worried about labour because of my pelvis (i have synthesis pubis dysfunction) and he basically said loads of people have babies, you aren't special, shut up and that giving birth "isn't a big deal"

I said actually it is a big deal to me to be worried and in pain for 24/48 hours and then maybe have to have a c-section due to pelvis.

Well according to him most women have babies really quickly. It then came out his ex had to be induced so she gave birth in 5 hrs (start to finish)

How annoying to be told it is not a big deal and be compared to his ex. grrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr

Anyway, all my books say labour (for first time moms) usual lasts 24-48 hours. This is from early labour through to active through to birth.

So my question is, how long was it for you from start to finish? xx

your OH sounds like a charmer...

grab his nuts every time you have a contraction and squeeze real hard, tell him that every time its painful you'll squeeze them, and say but dont worry you said its no big deal and according to you wont last long. Bet he soon changes his tune.

I was 24 hours in labour, ds was 2 weeks late..
but that's not long, you tell people after and you get oh well i/my sister/ i know someone who was in labour for a week....

Its a pain you can and will forget about and comes in waves, but everyone is different and there are lots of options for drugs/water birth etc

Your case is different and you should be talking to your midwife who should be discussing your options with you.

Good luck just think of your bundle in your arms after

  • in my first labour, my waters went before anyu contractions started. and from waters breaking to delivery was 9 hours. Plus 15 mins to delivery placenta and about 45 mins to have stitches (2nd degree tear)] baby was 6lb 3
2nd labour, i was induced due to gestational diabetes at 39+5. from having my waters broken to delivery was less than 3 hours. No worse pain than the natural labour. again 15 mins to deliver placenta and had 5 stitches which took 5 mins or so. baby was 8lb 3.

gas and air with both and didnt feel the need for anything stronger. but research all pain relief available and if you have SPD make sure you get support during the pregnancy and discuss options for birth with your midwife or specialist

My one & only beautiful baby boy arrived after about 12 hours labour, although was probably longer. Started what were later to be found out to be contractions at 7pm on the Wednesday night. They felt like my tummy was being tickled by one of those tensing machines to give you abs! I was laughing when it was all happening!! After a few hours (12pm) realised that I was in labour. Tried the TENS machine & took some paracetomal to no avail. Went to hospital & was sent home after about three hours to be told to have a hot bath. To get me from maternity to the car took five very painful contractions!! Had a hot bath for a couple of hours & then I was in such agony I couldn't get out of the bath so had to phone the ambulance which I did not want to do as I thought this was wasting their time and money. Anyway, they arrived, managed to get me into ambulance with contractions coming every minute or so. They were surprised that I had been sent home earlier from hospital but that is a whole another story...lol!! Anyway, got to hospital & after few more hours our baby boy arrived at 07.14 Thursday morning. Healthy & gorgeous!! I did the labour on meptid plus a bit of gas & air but that gas and air on its own made me violently sick, although my hubby loves the stuff!!!!

I am a total wimp. I hate dentists, needles, doctors, hospitals, etc.

But I managed fine with giving birth. It really is a different type of thing - unlike, say, breaking your arm, where it just hurts, there is a point to the whole labour thing.

I ended up in labour from 7am on a Wednesday morning until my son was born at 1am on Saturday morning. But I wasn't in pain all that time at all.

You'll be fine. Not to say it's easy, and that your OH is right or anything, but you'll cope, I promise. As I said, I did, and I'm a total wimp.

I was induced, its no guarantee of a quick delivery! Sore back all night then had daughter at 5pm. Only the last couple of hours were full on..... I will say I would take labour over a very crappy pregnancy anyday. And the drugs are AMAZING :)

There are three stages of labour, and it's the middle stage that is the painful one - and it usually lasts around an hour. Stage 1 can take days but is usually around 12 hours, and is not so painful. Stage 3 is the delivery of the placenta, and is a breeze.

With my son stage one took an age, and stages 2 and 3 were super-quick. It was around 24 hours in total but for most of that not much was happening.
With my daughter I was induced and the whole thing was about 3 hours start to finish. At one point I thought I was going to deliver in the hospital corridor, and stage 2 was only 10 minutes.
  • i had a really good birth, albeit long, 80 hrs from start of contractions, but probably only 24 hrs active labour. i believe it was only that long as baby and i were back to back.

i found it really was nothing to be scared of, though i didn't have spd. i had no pain relief apart from some gas and air after my waters had been broken while waiting for my little girl to turn into the right position.

what i found really helpful was using natal hypnotherapy, i used the cd from 32 weeks and read the book that goes with it, i personally found being educated on all my options invaluable in the lead up to the birth.

sounds crazy, but being relaxed is the best thing you can do. all the midwives commented on how calm and chilled i was throughout. :D
  • Number 1 - Was 23 hours as she was back to back and took her time turning around, but have to say was really good on pain levels
Number 2 - 9 hours again back to back so so painful and wouldn't turn around; I would have KILLED anyone who thought they could take the gas and air from me, so glad to get the pethidine as well. lol
Number 3 - 4 hours and a dream, but she wasn't back to back, instead choosing to be 9 days late lol

You honestly cant compare your labour to others as everyone is different, and have such different pain levels. Good luck and remember regardless of the pain it truly is worth it :)
