How long were you in labour?

Just posted in the less than 12 weeks pregnant thread but wanted some feedback from people who have given birth.

My Oh had a go at me as I said I was feeling worried about labour because of my pelvis (i have synthesis pubis dysfunction) and he basically said loads of people have babies, you aren't special, shut up and that giving birth "isn't a big deal"

I said actually it is a big deal to me to be worried and in pain for 24/48 hours and then maybe have to have a c-section due to pelvis.

Well according to him most women have babies really quickly. It then came out his ex had to be induced so she gave birth in 5 hrs (start to finish)

How annoying to be told it is not a big deal and be compared to his ex. grrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr

Anyway, all my books say labour (for first time moms) usual lasts 24-48 hours. This is from early labour through to active through to birth.

So my question is, how long was it for you from start to finish? xx

Don't worry about pain - that is what epidurals are for and you don't get any medals for suffering. Alternatively ask for an elective section although having had both I would opt for a natural birth for pain level, as afterwards the pain is much worse in a section.

I bet his ex wife has a different story about it being a big deal! Induced or accelerated deliveries can be very painful as there is no gradual build up , just wham full contractions.

With my first i was in slow labour for two days which culminated in a c-section on day 3, with my second labour started at lunchtime and ended in a c-section at 4 in the morning (suspect i would have had her not long after that)
The general thinking is that the first is the longest as the body doesn't know what to do having said that my firned had hers in the car park after being in labour for half an hour every birth is different.

I can only advise you not to read any more posts, you will get horror stories galore and you dont need that.

Take adivice from your midwife and deal with the labour and birth when it happens, you will be in the best hands.

    Every single woman is different.

Please stop worrying and enjoy your pregnancy.
make the most of it, we are only here for the weekend.

I understand you're worried, but everyone is different and it is totally irrelevant how long anyone else was in labour for, it means nothing in terms of how long you are likely to be in labour.

Talk to your doctor if you are worried (and ignore your boyfriend, men often dismiss childbirth worries, it's easy for them they're not the ones going through it, their contribution to the process is over early on and only takes a few minutes :D)

  • I am only worried to a normal level, not freaking out or anything :)

I know it will be hard but my view is that it's got to come out no matter what! I am over the moon about the baby and looking forward to when it gets here, pain or no pain!

The thing that has miffed me is that my partner presumes to know everything as he has a kid with his ex. So I just wanted to prove to him that he is wrong in saying that most womens labour only lasts a few hours and that, in fact, everyone is different and could be from 45mins to days.

But he would never take my word for it so I thought I would ask all you lovely ladies how long you were in labour for to make him shut his big cake hole :)

When mine were born, the midwives only counted it from when the contractions were so many minutes apart (can't remember the exact time). So baby 1 was 7 hrs 50 mins, baby 2 was 3 hrs 50 mins.

From the very first contraction to being born, baby 1 took about 15 and a half hours. Baby 2 took about 12 hours.

You're really not in that much pain when it first begins - unless you have a super fast labour! - with baby 2, I woke up in the morning with niggling pains. I went to a funeral at lunchtime, then into town with a 14 month old in a buggy. Caught the bus home with baby, buggy and 2 bags of shopping. Finally decided I should go to hospital at about 6pm :D

I don't know anything about synthesis pubis dysfunction, so can't help with that.

But tell your OH to !!!!!! :D :rotfl:

  • Think it is very difficult to say.

Some people class labour starting from the first time the have their first contraction, even if there is a 30 minute gap between each contraction. Where as I believe midwives say you are not in labour until you are 3cm.

As many say if it was unbearable then none of us would have a second one or third or....
