I am fully aware that P&P stands for postage AND PACKAGING. I have clearly stated that in serveral of my posts.

The reason why I advise sellers to include packaging costs in the item cost and not in the P&P cost is for two reasons.

One: Buyers expect to be charged the actual cost of the stamp and some will leave low stars and/or ask for a refund if they feel they have been overcharged on postage.

    and

Two: If you combine postage on multiple items, you will lose more if you have unreasonable postage costs than you would if you offered free p&p or the actual postage cost.

Buyers bid/buy on total price so if they want to pay up to £10 for a certain item and you have two of these items for sale, it may be best to offer free P&P on both items. That way the £20 is yours (obviously minus fee's and postage/packaging).. but if you listed the items at £6.99 plus £3.00 P&P, the buyer would expect you to combine P&P. You may offer to reduce the 2nd P&P by half so you'll lose £1.50 which could have been added in the item price. The two items together might cost the same as sending one so the buyer would feel they have been overcharged £1.50 (or £3.00 if you don't offer combined postage discount).

lovinituk, the issue with vicx's posts are she understands how it should work but is telling others to leave low stars based on how other buyers apparently feel whilst tell us she has 3 lows despite only adding 20pence extra.

Perhaps a clear indication of how some sellers treat other sellers when leaving feedback based on how they feel about eBay and their own 'unfair treatment' rather than how the sale actually went.

Where have I told other buyers to leave low stars? You will find that I stated 'I would personally leave low stars'.

I have already stated that I have never left low or high ratings on the stars basically because it is more time taking than leaving a positive comment. However, if sellers charge unreasonable postage cost then I will leave low stars if I feel it is deserved.

"Buyers expect to be charged the actual cost of the stamp"

You are the only person here to agree with the OP that the P&P was worth complaining about. This thread has nothing at all to do with what sellers should do, the question was about what a buyer should do and you told OP to leave a low because youthink the overcharge was £1.51.

"Where have I told other buyers to leave low stars?"

    From your earlier post (#21):

" This is why you should rate low on the P&P stars when leaving feedback .... If the seller wants to make a profit and cover the cost of packaging .... then this should be added to the item price not the P&P cost"

No I did not tell the OP to leave a low star. I said I would personally rate low on the stars. Where in that sentence does it tell the OP what to do?
I have now added you to my pest list. Not only are you boring me going around in circles but you must not have a life if you have to reply everytime I do.

Although I don't leave low stars when I am the buyer (unless the seller has done something really stupid), I have no sympathy for the seller in question (from the OP) if they do receive low stars for overcharging by that much!
  • vicx there's little point discussing this if you are going to deny what you said three pages back that we can all read. You are right, I don't have a life and I don't care either!

Ludovico will now pester you for that comment :rotfl:S/he seems to believe that it was only a 51p over charge.

Its not really that it was just 51p (although its closer to a £1 in reality as even a single mailing bag doesn't cost £1 unless its lined with gold flakes!). Its the fact that they overcharged by about 40% AND then could have put it right when challenged but chose not to WHEN they know the buyer can leave low stars. If they couldn't care less about their stars then so be it. If they do care about their stars then they need to wake up.

Buyers want something for nothing now and if sellers don't realise that and adjust accordingly then they will suffer at the hands of the DSRs. As a seller I'm so against it in principle but in reality - evolve to survive!

The most annoying part of the DSR's is the buyers don't even have to back it up. Item could be charged at less than cost for postage and they could still leave a 1 or 2.

Many buyers aren't educated in the effect low stars has on a seller. My wife predominantly buys on eBay and has FB of 1700+. I asked her today if someone left her DSR's of 4 across the board is that good or bad? She assumed good as 4 out of 5 is a decent score. If only half our buyers thought 4 was good, we'd all be restricted as our scores would fall below 4.6

Its possible, but if it does happen there is more than likely something else the buyer isn't happy with, its a mistake or its malicious. A seller needs to do everything they can to avoid it happening, but sometimes luck is against them unfortunately.
