I didn't realise any modern cars still had timing chains, i thought it must have been a thing of the past.

All Ford TDCi engines are on chain AFAIR. Mine is on 161k now and as silent as a lamb.

    chains last longer than belts

For many drivers a chain will last the life of the car

Modern belts on some models are at 4y change £300+ job

Most manufacturers have now gone over to 3 year/36K mile cam belt intervals.
The Mazda 3/6 petrol engines use cam chains.
In the old days cam chains used to last upwards of 200K miles, if they got noisy, then a tensioner change normally cured it. Nowadays however, I have heard of cam chain failures in small/medium Vauxhalls (Agila for instance) as low as 40K miles.
