I'd do it differently again, I'd make the whole pie, eat as much as we needed and freeze the rest for another occasion.0

Area of the base is pi x R squared.
(4x3.14)squared = 158 sq in, half that = 79, so take sq root of 79 and div by pi = 3ins approx
That doesn't allow for quantities used in making sides, that's just the base0 -

Me too, saves time too.0 -
Thanks everyone. I assumed someone would know the answer straight away as others would do this, but it seems you are all more MSE than me and freeze instead
Think I will make the filling fresh as its a sweet pie to be eaten cold and I don't think it would taste as good defrosted, but I like the idea of freezing half the pastry, can I freeze it raw?
Thanks for working it out googler I think your answer is the radius so for the benefit of anyone else reading, half of an 8" pie crust is a 5.5-6" pie crust. Take your point about the sides but that's close enough for me.0 -
Yup I too would make the pastry and cut in half and wrap the uncooked half in clingfilm and freeze. After all you can buy uncooked pastry already made thats frozen at Christmas (Justrol) no differance really
:):)
I always make more than I need and I live alone ,but it does help freezing some and saves time when you need some more

I go by the mantra - "always cook twice". Saves labour in the long run

This thread may also help with freezing pastry https://forums.moneysavingexpert.com/discussion/43260

Hi everyone. Have been lurking but not posting for a long time as I was spending too much time on the PC!!
Not sure if this is the right place, but I'm sure all you wonderful people would like to help.
End of the month, and I am NOT going to go and buy more stuff. I found a pack of puff pastry lurking in the freezer and no idea what to do with it for dinner tonight.
I have no fish or meat, so it needs to be veggie. I have:
potatoes
onions
cheese
chopped tomatoes
baked beans
a pepper
fresh tomatoes
various spices /seasonings
Needs to be substantial enough for dinner for 4, and should be okay to reheat as I will need to make it before I go out this afternoon. I will then eat with the children after school, and dh will eat later after work. I have salad stuff in too.
Any suggestions would be gratefully received)
PS: I have tried the recipe finder on BBC but for some reason it's not opening for me today. Just a page with ads round the edge for some weird reason!Father Ted: Now concentrate this time, Dougal. These
(he points to some plastic cows on the table) are very small; those (pointing at some cows out of the window) are far away...:D:D
