How do I make my laptop "wireless"?

  • Yes I have, Take This, and this is what it showed, most of which means nothing at all to me, but probably will to someone who knows what they are talking about.

    ADSL/ADSL MAX-AVAILABLE

    ALL THE FOLLOWING UNAVAILABLE:
ADSL2+, SDSL, FTTC, ALL LLU x DSL'S, CABLE BROADBAND, WIRELESS BROADBAND (does this mean I cannot go "wireless"?) & BT21 CN.

    Thankyou.

No, it is entirely unconnected with your ability to go 'wireless'.

You just need that Wireless Router. What offer has your ISP made to you?
  • Phone them up and tell them you're leaving because you want a wireless router that a.n. other supplier is offering. They will most likely offer you free one at no cost but make you extend your contract for another 12 months, judging by the age of your modem I guess that doesn't worry you.

At least sticking with TT means they will be able to offer support for the router you get :D

Changing would get you exactly the same.

the op has paid upfront for their line rental, so are effectively stuck until next october.
I would think that TT will prvide a new modem, otherwise they're cheaper to buy from pcworld (or an other online retailer if you know what you need) than go through the burden/hassle/cost of changing supplier.
I have a spare TT router at home, as I still use my tiscali one that was sent to me - even though I had a tiscali USB modem at one point. I can't remember why they sent me a new modem router though.

How do you know when she paid?
You can also pay upfront for line rental with BT. Though it's £120 as opposed to £114.

Thanks to All, for your replies.

I am "locked in" for the next 12 months with TT, as I've paid "up front" line rental, in order to achieve a lower monthly cost.

I will have a go at calling them, and just asking for an upgraded Modem. I won't have much "leverage", but I shall give it a go.
If this doesn't work, approximately how much do they cost to buy? And is it a simple job to switch to a new one?

You can buy a perfectly adequate wireless router on eBay for a tenner upwards.
    Netgear DG834G or similar.
No free lunch, and no free laptop ;)

Did you 'renew' your broadband contract at the same time? If not, then you do have leverage.

Perhaps you can try to give as much information as you can in one post. Including the exact package you are on now.

+1 For the idea of getting a DG834G if the ISP does n't come up trumps. Get a V4 if you can, plenty about, Ebay, Crack Converters, charity shops, boot sales etc.
