Aldi Help!

Hi
I purchased a steam iron from Aldi £40, it is 10 months old and has gone faulty. I took it back to the local Aldi, they said that they have a new returns policy from January 2007. They will only deal with faulty items within three months of purchase, after three months they say you have to return the item back to the manufacturer. I would have to return the iron to the manufacturer.
I explained that this was unfair when because when I purchased the iron this policy was not in place and that they were changing the terms and conditions. She would not accept this and said this was the new company policy. I asked for the head office phone number, she said she was not able to give me the number as they are ex directory. Does anyone have a contact number for Aldi head office?
From my understanding my contract is with Aldi, I do not see why I should have to go to the trouble and expense of returning the iron.
What can I do?
Any help would be appreciated.
Thanks

Sale of Goods Act - Reasonable standard of durability.
Just because they have a new policy doesn't overule the law - as said countless times, the contract is between you and Aldi. I'd send them a letter threatning legal action.
Even major stores like Aldi are modern day cowboys - I've had loads of stores trying to fob me off, but then when i send a letter saying want a refund within 28 days they soon change their mind - power to the people and all that0 -
Report them to Trading Standards. Stores CANNOT restrict your rights under the Sale of Goods Act - to do so is a criminal offence.0

Your contract is with Aldi. It is their responsibility to sort the problem out.
That said, they will probably only send it to the manufacturer for repair. It may be easier and less hassle to do this yourself, effectively cutting out the middle man. I would then claim the expenses back from Aldi.

No joy on any phone numbers though0 -
Stores like Lidl and Aldi manage to keep their prices low using particular methods--this is a prime example. As already said, they are in breach of the SOGA,but their managers are being pressured to implement this no doubt.0

there is a phone number for aldi on the leaflets you could try ringing that 1,No Links in Signature by site rules - MSE Forum Team 20

There are two issues here - your statutory rights provided by the Sale of Goods Act and other relevant legislation, and your contractual rights.
When you bought the item, you entered into a contract with set terms and conditions. They cannot change those and expect you to comply with them without question. The issue of SoGA has already been addressed.
When returning goods for a fault, a seller does have the right to send an item to verify that they are or are not at faul, but that should be reasonable. Saying that they will send anything off to a manufacturer is not, in my mind, reasonable.
I would contact ConsumerDirect for further advice. They may refer the matter direct to Trading Standards, or more likely, ask you to send a letter and see what happens.
Either way, I don't see how or why you should lose out. Your contractual rights, depending on what they were before, have almost certainly been breeched.Don't bother trying to sue me - I've got no money!0 -

That's a good plan. What they should do is advise you what to put in the letter, so you can pursue your civil case. They will probably also forward the details to Trading Standards for their information so they can investigate any criminal breaches, separate to your civil case. This won't have a direct effect on your case, but it might (should?!) stop them implementing this restrictive policy in future.0 -
