I must admit they had these large toploaders in australia when we travelled round there, at first I thought they looked so weird but they did wash well and quick and you could get a lot in them, we said next time we need one we're gonna look into getting one imported.

I had one when we lived in South Africa - it was bought as a wedding present. However, I was absolutely horrified at how much water they use in a country which is prone to droughts. If everyone goes on water meters in the UK you could end up with a HUGE bill.
  • I don't have a washing machine, but I do have a laundry room in my block of flats!! And I love the machine in there, it is a speed queen toploader!!! It does a "normal" wash in 21 minutes and a hot wash in 23 minutes!!! So I can do 4 loads of washing in 2 hours!! Perfect for someone who has very little time!!! :D

I think that when I move and have room to buy a washing machine I might buy a toploader, although am a bit concerned about the amount of water they use.

My boyf's mum's washing machine takes 2 hours for a normal wash!! And so does my dad's machine.

Soap nuts - you can get them from Spirit of Nature and they really work.
  • I have a samsung something ( cant remember the model). It has a screen on it that tells you how long each program takes.

You can also create your own wash as such by changing the temp, amount of rinses etc.

A quick wash takes 35 minutes and thats with three spins and on 40c.

A normal wash takes 1hr 40 again with three spins and at 40c. Thats for coloureds. coton washes take longer but i dont use them.

Also have a sensitive skin program that takes a bit longer, i assume it just extra rinses it.

As for powder i mix what i use depending on what i am washing. aslo i only use half the amount recommended.

Everytihng comes out clean so i am happy with it! Only had it a few months!

Yes I recommend soap nuts too! Please everyone have a look at them, they are great honestly!

Think of the damage you are doing putting all those enzymes in the water system.

Can you use them on a cold wash? I've just looked at them on Spirit of Nature & it says from 30 degrees. Thanks.
  • Bring back the old "Twin tub" I say... washing can be as quick or slow as you want... or as hot or cool as you want !

Think of it as a back to basics therapy - like cooking fresh veg !

Trouble is, today's generation have gotten used to a faster pace of life.. and, like fast food, automatic washing machines are equally as bad and expensive ...

Not the answer you're looking for - sorry -

Someone out there must be able to help me. My washing machine takes forever to wash a load. I have a Bosch 1100, and on a 40 degree wash the shortest programme is approx 1 and a half hours !!! I can do a quick cold wash which takes 30 mins, but it doesnt work on grubby whites and doesn't spin as fast so everything is really really wet, it's meant for woollies really.

I want to buy a new machine that does a 40 degree but faster. Only trouble is when I look at all the washing machines there is all the info on enconomy and water consumption etc. but no mention of programme lengths. i have to ask the salesman for the manual and they loo at me like i'm a bit nuts !!

Can anyone recommend a machine and model, (that is still available for purchase) and let me know what the programme length is.

    thanks everyone

My Zanussi takes 2 hours 19 mins to do a 40 degree wash  I do about 3 full loads a day so it takes all day. It has a 30 min 30 degree wash which I use whenever possible.
:o:o Just discovered I can halve the time on several of my usual programmes :o:o
  • The way I get over this problem IS NOT IDEAL but it works............ I also have a Bosch and apart from not being able to set it on Economy 7 I quite like it. If you let the machine wash as normal and when the wash cycle is done turn the button to the off position. Then select the Rinse/Freshen up programme and start. It is the amount of rinses which lengthens the programme and the Rinse/Freshen up is a thorough rinse and spin without rinsing it three times. It does however mean that you have to keep an eye on your washing!

    snip

Exactly! and you can get a suprising amount of laundry done really quickly, and recycle the soapy water until ending up with the really grotty ( sports/muddy ) stuff. The spin depends on how long you want, you can see the water coming out, and direct all the clean soapy water back into the wash part.
Although you hard pressed to find them nowdays, the odd second hand white good shop will do them and we have a local W/M engineer that will service/repair them.
Unfortunately I was forced to have an automatic fitted into a new kitchen for appearences when we sell the place :-(
