How to get the kids to switch off the lights!

  • ah the age old conundrome! (sp???) how old are they? I really struggled with this with my ds but from about 17 he started to understand when I explained that bills were going up & I was worried out about outgoings. He then started to make a real effort. Best thing with young people is to catch them doing what you want and thank & praise rather than moaning about what you don't like. I agree to save the stress & hassle turn them off urself while they are still getting it, and also agree when they coming running for a meal/tv prog or something turn them right round again and get them to go and turn things off being they get what they're after.

now the fella on the other hand that's altogether beyond me!

wait until kids are in bed, give it 30 mins for them to have snuggled down....

then go in lights on, make them get out of bed to switch everything off, and once they have done that, watch them get back in bed... then tell them to switch the lights off... means getting out of that warm bed again..

couple of days of this they might get the message

Oh I must say this is very good and very tempting....:D

  • Mmm, I wish I knew the answer. Mine also have problems with closing doors to keep the heat in, wearing clothes more than once, switching off one electrical device before putting another one on and wearing enough clothes in the house to not need the central heating going. When you work it out let me know would you?

You could get some timer switches so some stuff switches off automatically if it has been left on - that way you can set it x number of hours for whatever it is it to charge fully.

Or some blanking plates for the sockets in their rooms :D

I know a bloke who's 10yr old son kept forgetting to switch lights off. So he replaced his bedroom light switch with one of those vacuum wall switches someone mentioned in a post above. Its like a big round button that slowly releases itself and then the light goes off. You can adjust it for something like 30 seconds to half an hour. He set it for 40 seconds and his poor son had to keep getting up to switch the light on again time and time again when he was playing in his bedroom. Very harsh, specially for a child rather than a teenager, but it worked. Mind you, surely it would teach kids they DIDN'T need to switch lights off as it would happen automatically? I think it was more of a punishment than a reminder. Cant say i approve!

My housemate is a swine for this! She will be sat watching tv and I will pop upstairs to my room and her light will be on! The amount of times I’ve shouted back down ‘do you want your light off or you back up in a minute’.
I started to get into a habit of coming out the bathroom and turning off her bedroom light (her room is next door to the bathroom) though the other day I did it and didn’t even realize she was in there til she said ‘we had a power cut?’!!!!

Get low power bulbs. Our upstairs total light-bulb output went from a staggering 525 watts, (7x75 watt bulbs), to 77 watts, (7 x 11 watt bulbs).

Even if every light upstairs is on, the power used is still about the same as if ONE single old style bulb was left on. You tend to relax about it after that!

One my old head tried at school was to promise the school council half of the saving from the electricity bill for the projects they wanted to fund. It led to a somewhat overenthusiastic whirling dervish of lights being switched off - unfortunately they'd nip into classrooms to turn them off at breaktimes and whatever - while the teacher was still working in there!
