How to get the kids to switch off the lights!

I have tried the please, the threats, the OMG for christ sake switch your xbox/music /bedroom light/toilet light if you are not using them but still they forget/don't do it/have to be reminded to do....

What does everyone else do to make sure the lights go off?

It is not as if electricity is cheap these days.....

I'm sorry to say I haven't got any good ideas for this one.

The only thing that worked for me was moving out and having to pay my own bills! I even said 'I've turned into my Dad!' Going round switching lights off! lol
Are the words 'I have a cunning plan' marching with ill-deserved confidence in the direction of this conversation?

Honestly? Switch them off yourself, its just easier, less stressful and far less time consuming.

You can enjoy a wry smile in about 15-20 years when they get their first bills, until then they just won't really get it.

Our kids got really interested in electricity consumption when we first had an OWL electricity monitor http://www.theowl.com/
We plonked it on the mantelpiece, so we could see it when we were watching TV or whatever. Whenever it was indicating high usage we all used to run around turning lights and appliances off.....well it was fun for a while!!

I believe a few of the energy suppliers give these gadgets free, and it may help with training your family:D

I turn the electric off at the box! This works best when they have their TV or music on too high, luckily I have a new box and everything is seperated out floor by floor so I only turn off their stuff and not mine.

    Oh yes, definitely.

    'Muuuuuuuuuummmmmm!!!! Where's my ****** charger?'

Oh, that - well, I smelled something funny and then I went in there and it was really, really hot, so I was scared it would cause a fire, so I chucked it away.

    'I need another one then'

Oh, I'm sorry, darling. I've just had a massive electricity bill so I can't afford to replace anything at all. It's a shame because your brother's iPod charger and the PS3 seemed to be doing exactly the same thing when I went into his room. Maybe I should get an electrician in before replacing any of these items, as I wouldn't like it to ever happen again?
