Lois - wow on the graphs!! :rotfl: *hangs head in shame at having no idea what a pivot table is or how to even make a graph*!

TYO, there's no shame in not being a graph person. I'm a science teacher, so graphs are an everyday part of my professional life, so that means I don't feel I've got my head round a set of numbers until I've made a graph of some kind, and that works its way into my approach to MFW. It's nice for us graph-geeks to compare notes with each other, but there's no point in people who aren't naturally graph-minded feeling they ought to do graphs. :)

Oh, and a pivot table is a feature in Excel that summarises information. My spending diary has columns for date, month, amount, category and notes. The pivot table gives me a summary of how much I've spent in total on each category in each month.

Hi TYO, I think the weight loss is down to mainly moving more and smaller portions. My role means I sit with my lap top and some days, won't even notice 4-6 hours have gone by, and i may not have moved. I have set an alarm now for every 30 mins to make sure I get up, have a stretch, glass of water etc. Plus I am walking both during the day and evening, or jogging, running.

Giving up alcohol for a month, with March now being month 3, must have made a difference too. I am looking at 2012 though as a year of change, so fingers crossed I stick to it all.

On the gardening front, try basil from seed in the house. It's easy to grow. Pop a few seeds into a pot, put a plastic bag over the top, like a hat, to help it warm up, water little but regularly. Smells lovely and so cheap :)

Have a good week, Tilly x

Oooh graphs. Now those are the real stuff. I only really like pivot tables because I can make graphs with them. I have a financial "master spreadsheet" and I've just counted - 11 graphs total:
    1) Total assets over time - sum of all bank accounts minus CC
    2) Total I owe the world - mortgage plus loans minus total assets
    3) Mortgage and loans over time all the way from when I first got them to now
    4) Close-up of part of graph 3 so I can see even little OPs making a difference
    5) Mortgage projection into the future all the way to MFD
    6) Pie chart to show how much of my house is equity, mortgage, FL1 and FL2
    7) Same kind of pie chart but showing how it was when I first bought the place, for comparison
    8) Stacked bar chart showing where my income comes from, month by month
    9) Stacked bar chart showing where my outgoings go to, month by month, on the same scale as (8) and lined up with it, so I can compare
    10) Line graph of utility usage over time
    11) Line graph of utility spending over time

I didn't make all of those to start with, of course. I started with a few, and then every so often I get struck by an idea for another one. :D

My spreadsheet is already threatening to explode so I daren't :o

  • Hi GG, I feel just like that, feet firmly placed, bring it on attitude. Marvellous. As today has been horrendous and I feel like throwing my laptop out of a 10 storey building FD has been a ray of sunshine in an otherwise bleak day. Maybe I need another spreadsheet to cheer me up :):):)

Inverse relationship between happiness and mortgage balance :D

GG & Lois, I can see a MFW spreeadsheet/pivot competition taking place - puts a new slant on 'you show me yours'.

  • Morning, bbrrrr it's chilly this morning.

As the planning gets underway for operation mega mortgage clearance, DH and I have decided to update figures quarterly, as otherwise we could be become a bit insane about tracking/updates etc. I have made a £1500 OP this morning but won't be showing that until beginning of June - I wonder if I can stick to this :o

Middle of the week already and in a flash it will be Friday afternoon. I have a run planned with the kids on Saturday so fingers crossed I don't collapse in a heap afterwards.

    Enjoy the week, Tilly x
