    MFW 67 - Finally mortgage free! 💙😁
  • Hi NewGirly, we've learnt a lot this month about portions but also making sure the freezer odds and s@ds are used too.

I need to sit down tomorrow and get sorted for February - I won't be able to do the same again, but I am hoping to keep it reasonably low

    God luck with your plans

Congrats on the food bill...that's AMAZING!!

We are running down the larders too, no big food bills for us for a few weeks and being more thoughtful. Also trying to spend less on alcohol..a considerable amount goes on that:-( Seem to be making more risotto and jacket potatoes as a result!!

I just informed hubby if your shopping spend... He thinks I'm becoming too obsessed with it all, I said hey that's just something to aim for we're not gonna try it yet ... He has a look of horror on his face ... Cheers Tilly it mademe laugh anyway :)
  • Hi Brizzle and El, whilst I wouldn't be this strict all year round, it's surprised me by how well we can cope. HM cakes, some HM bread have helped to reduce the shopping bill as well.

I still come back to Christmas though - the trolley's full of food I saw people buying, plus we did buy a fair amount ourselves, but not the same quantities as previous years, made me feel a bit off food. It's a bit hard to describe really. Thinking about this, perhaps my reaction is to the £ people were spending and affordability. Who knows, the mind works in strange ways.

Mr T chatted last night about our food spends - he didn't think we would achieve such low spends and was waiting for me to ask him to pop to the local shop. He's also curious about if we did it in January, why can't we do it all year round  As it's only because of the freezer full to bursting, I don't believe we could, although there are loads of blogs around about living/shopping on a shoe string.

Given our love of cooking, I can't see us going down that route but I am looking forward to being able to pick our own veg again. I'm planting tomato and chilli seeds next weekend - in the house :)

Off for a dog walk now - lovely as it is without the snow, the ground is so wet and the hounds love nothing more than a good roll in it - imagine my kitchen floor when the come back in :eek::eek:

After that its time for a soak in the bath and quick get ready to go to a party.

    Have a good Sunday

  • One thing to add abut larders, I know they need stocking back up as they are emptied, but ours has got stuff in which definitely needs using up. When we start restocking it will be specific things.

I'm doing our next menu plan today and I can fully see where your coming from, I did a stock take of herbs and spices the other day and we have so much stuff we need to use up ourselves

I need to start getting my polytunnel organised of this year I have been neglecting that for so long now :(
  • Well done on your menu planning. I wish we could be so organised!
Paid off mortgage nine years early in 2013. Now picking and choosing our work to fit in with the rest of our lives!
Still thrifty though, after all these years:D

Hi Tilly, you inspired me this week to not go grocery shopping at all and live off what we had already in stock and we managed it :j our last proper grocery shop was the 14th Jan so nearly two weeks done (except for OH buying a bag of cookies last Thursday:o)

There were a couple of time where I actually wrote a list and was about to go to the local supermarket, but instead found an alternative meal to make instead. I've found it quite a hard habit to break..

Our freezer is now nearly empty so we'll need to re-stock too, but like you i'm now only going to buy what's needed rather than buy unnecessarily.
