How long can you use potatoes before you chuck them away? Quite a few of mine have started sprouting quite badly and were a bit green under the skin when I peeled them. Should I have thrown them away? I just peeled them so there was no more green-ness......

    Hi There,

My potatoes are always sprouting & turning green. I still use them as long as they havent gone all soft and squishy (if you know what I mean).

Should be fine as long as you get all the green bits. I still use them doing the same but give up on them when they start going wrinkely (sp?)

Remove the sprouts and don't eat the green bits, then you'll be fine.

    Hello,

I just washed up and when I placed my glass pint jug on the draining board, it shattered into hundreds of tiny pieces. When I say shattered, it shattered & exploded (but that would be a bit too strong a word).

Does Pyrex do that? Should I get a pyrex jug next time (would prefer glass to plastic?) :)

    Thanks

Whilst agreeing with the advice given, may I suggest that potatoes are stored in a dark cupboard as this helps prevent them turning green.

As for the potatoes sprouting, this of course is because this is the time when ALL potatoes try growing, so I merely rub the growths out and STILL peel and cook protaoes in June even when they are a bit flacid, as cook up in the usual way.

My experience is that Pyrex smashes into larger pieces than glass, certainly ...

BTW the bread pudding was just as good as usual with wraps in it, DH had the last bit today. It wouldn't usually last as long as this but we were away so fewer gannetts around ...

Store them in a cool dark place - a garage or shed is ideal, provided it's dry.

Don't store them in plastic bags - use a large paper potato sack if you can get hold of one. Some people also use an old pillowcase with success.

That sounds like *heat shock*. If the glass jug was hot from the wah-up water, and you placed it onto a cold surface (the draing rack) then the shock in the glass might shatter it.

Pyrex on the other hand is designed to withstand extremes of temperature, so is less likely to shatter in that way.

    Angel,

I find keeping some of mine in the fridge (if you have room) helps them to keep even longer. I have found that, even in the dark, they seem to develop sprouts if they are too warm.
