I always freeze our milk too. I started doing it to stop myself 'popping' into the supermarket for more milk and then coming out with £10 worth of shopping
At work we buy the one pint plastic containers, so I bring these home, sterilise them (using the solution we use for wine making) and decant milk from larger containers into these.
As everyone says they do take a while to defrost. I pop the container into a dish and leave it on the side in the kitchen.Enjoying an MSE OS life0 -
i have started to freeze milk. first time i defrosted it tho i put it in fridge to defrost( 4 pinter) it took 4 day's. my fridge is very cold but i couldn't believe it.
i've now learnt to either put it in a carrier bag outside back door at night or in the sink over night.
why does it go a yucky yellow colour in freezer ? but defrost and turn back to white .0 -
Seperates, weird that yellow colour isn't it, amount of times I have said 'no it hasn't gone off' when someone has seen it frozen.
I only usually freeze smaller ones, or I keep the 2 pint cartons and decant the 4 pints into them, just find it easier for both freezer storage, using and defrosting. One day I might be more organised...........

I have always frozen the milk - and so does my mum! Due to various 'discussions' with my mother-in-law I contacted the Food Standards Agency, who confirmed it is absolutely fine to freeze! We currently use skimmed and whole milk and both are fine.
If it separates when frozen, give it a good shake when defrosted and it should be fine. It does take a while to defrost (as previously mentioned), so I leave it on the draining board overnight - my fridge is too cold and it takes an age to thaw otherwise!0 -
Hi everyone,
Not been here in AGES tsk tsk but have found myself a (soon to be)husband and job since last time and haven;t been moneysaving at all, I'm naughty.
Anyhoo we have just sold the flat(which means we can pay off all the debts leaving us with just a mortgage) and are currently waiting to here if our offer on a house has been accepted(I'l finally have a freezer so can batch cook and buy reduced food and things, I'm very excited about this:j ).
Anyhoo(sorry I'm babbling) we have decided that once we get our new house we want to spend as little as possible and hopefully save for a wedding, pay off mortgage sooner, plus the house we wants needs new windows, central heating, bathroom, kitchen, complete redecoration so money will be tight for a while.
So that brings me to my question, where has the Sticky tips index gone? Wanted a read through for inspiration but can't find it now
Also can I just say a big thanks for the recipe index, I'm going to start scratch cooking in the new house and my bloke is the worlds fussiest man so going to make him sit and read through it and give me a list of things he will at least try.0 -
ive always been a bit unsure about freezing milk but from your replys ive changed my mind. but ...do i need to pour any from the plastic carton? i mean does milk 'expand' ?0

We always freeze our milk......... never had a problem. Defrost in the sink overnight and it's usually fine for the morning. As for the special milk - if it doesn't mention freezing - I would freeze it.

i freeze mine in the containers they come in. don't tip anyway.
it does expand and it does become an odd shape. mine always gets a rounded bottom and won't stand up when i trying to defrost it, lol. but i've not had a container split when milk has expanded tho.0 -
It's 5th down from the top. Is that the one you're talking about?Don't worry about the world coming to an end today. It's already tomorrow in Australia.0
