The theatre group name is meant to be tongue-in-cheek, but probably is just ill-considered, not deliberately offensive. As for getting good use from a decaying building, sure beats having it bulldozed for a nest of tiny new-builds, and is likely to be a more stable tenant than many. Depending on the space, you may find it is an office, props store and rehearsal space, not destined for performance anyway.

Thesps are sometimes disorganised but are generally well-meaning, so are unlikley to be riding roughshod over the gravestones. Why not see if you can get involved in some manner, and make sure everyone settles in nicely? It could be a big boon.

As far as I can tell, the name Barebones came before the idea of using the chapel.

Unless there is a problem with this idea causing a safety hazard I really wouldn't have any objection to this happening where I live.

  • The cemtery is still in use with the parish council still selling plots to families.
They wish to carry out performances outside as well inside. Many other suggestions for uses of the chapel have been suggested but the parish council seem to be set on this being the only idea being pushed forward and there are many other venues in the village that could be used. We have a village hall, community centre, school with a purpose built auditorium with 450 seats.
None of the families with graves in here have been consulted over this proposal and the whole process has been very underhanded. Not to mention that the theatre group have made no mention in their proposals for their planned extension!! I am not against the theatre group just their choice of location.
  • Now you have explained more clearly I fully support you. There is no possible way a council should grant permission for change of use like this.

we have a couple of chapels in our area that are no longer used as places of workship. one was purchased by a childrens group and used as a daily creche with kids running amock through the churchyard which is more disrespectfull than having a a theatre group use the chapel.

the other one was purchased by a local business to turn into and office (12 yrs ago) 3 yrs ago the council forced the owners to demolish the chapel as it become a haven for drug users etc. and was an unsafe building, these users had caused far too much damage to the churchyard attached to the chapel that this is still fenced off.

so at least your disused and derelict chapel is going to get some use. also most theatre groups around here are locals anyway.

Its great to see all the nice, sensible, and rational responses to such an OTT and unreasonable OP. Good to see there are so many more nice, level headed people than nasty irrational ones.

    .

Where are they going to be carrying out the services no, if not in the chapel?

Believe me when I say I've seen far more tasteless things in the name of "art".

And far more tasteless things go on in Edinburgh cemeteries

Can you provide some evidence showing that they want to perform inside the cemetry grounds, that is on the graves, paths etc? You may have some more supporters for your cause then. Give some facts

All the information supplied and been found online suggests that their outdoor activities are at outdoor festivals.

It does look more to be that the once quiet idel may get a little noisy with parked cars etc, but it is a main road by the looks of it , so shouldn't really be an issue. The size of the present structure looks very small, so it looks as if they would be using it for workshops, rehearsals, not actual performances.

I have no issue with you opposing the planning permission to extend, that is your right and any extension would be detrimental to the look of the building anyway, but I still don't see your viewpoint, that it is disrespectful using a chapel, which is no longer in use, for te arts. As already stated, I do feel that the villagers don't want it in the back yards. If it couldn't be used for the arts, what would you suggest it being used for? Obviously the diocese dont want it anymore.

i cant believe some people think its ok for performances to be held in a cemetry while people are trying to mourn their loved ones. Is a cemetry not a place for quietness and times of reflection and rememberance??? Would you really be happy with this in your village??? Not to mention parking issues, noise issues.
Disgusted with some posters responses. Hang your heads!!!

When was the building last used as a a chapel and when was the last burial?
