Theatre being built in old chapel!

Future of chapel could be decided by residents!!
google " Forest row chapel barebones"
So mad about this! How could this company think its ok to have a theatre in a cemetry. The very name (barebones theatre group) shows their complete lack of respect. And to make matters worse the local council arent listening to their parishioners views!! It has all been very underhanded in trying to push through this proposal, letters aparently being sent to people living in the local vicinty, wheras this doesnt appear to have happened.
Our village has at least 3 venues that can be used for performances and it just shows that even a cemetry is no longer a safe haven from our ludicrous planning laws in this country.
Vent over! For Now!!!

I am so sorry but I love the name of the theatre group, I would pay to see them preform in a chapel even more at this time of year.
I am not sure though why a cemetery should be a safe haven though, surely after 100 years you can dig them up anyway and is that being put forward ?
If they just want to hold performances there then really what is the problem ?There is a race of men that don't fit in; A race that can't stand still;
So they break the hearts of kith and kin, and roam the world at will.

I could think of lots of far worse things to turn it into, or even just to be left to decay, that would be far more disrespectful.I'd rather be an Optimist and be proved wrong than a Pessimist and be proved right.0

Our local small theatre is an ex Sunday school, the chapel was demolished a few years ago it's ideal if a little small for a theatre, do you have a link OP?0

just look around the country (UK)
chapels turned to homes, offices, garages etc. so what different to a theatre group.
i tell you want let the parish close it down and let it site empty and decay and let it be used as a drug den and a place for the homeless to break in for somewhere to sleeps. I am sure the residents would rather prefer this.0 -
i cant believe some people think its ok for performances to be held in a cemetry while people are trying to mourn their loved ones. Is a cemetry not a place for quietness and times of reflection and rememberance??? Would you really be happy with this in your village??? Not to mention parking issues, noise issues.
Disgusted with some posters responses. Hang your heads!!!0 -
So a community building is being re-used for something the whole community can enjoy, see no harm in it tbh.If at first you don't succeed, maybe bomb disposal isn't the best career choice.0

Personally I think its horrendous too. Its not like there is a shortage of commercial buildings, there really isnt.
I was totally sad that a church was turned into a tesco but this is a lot worse as it has a cemetery whereas the one i know of didnt. Well aint funny how its the little things in life that mean the most? Not where you live, the car you drive or the price tag on your clothes.
Theres no dollar sign on piece of mind
This Ive come to know...
So if you agree have a drink with me, raise your glasses for a toast :beer:0 -

Perhaps the people you should be angry at, are the people who are selling/renting the chapel.
Why is the chapel no longer being used for the purpose that it was built for? Have they built another place to worship and instead of preserving the old building, decided that they can make money from it?0 -
It also depends on whether the cemetry is still being used for internments.
The one at the bottom of my road hasnt been used for over 25 years. There is a local community farm in there. The sheep graze over all the gravestones which keeps the grass down, there is a football pitch on an area which used to be a paupers grave, the wildflower/wooded area has gravetsones in there. The chapel itself is being used as a community centre for the younger people and they hold regular concerts in the grounds in the summer, to showcase young groups/singers. Cadbury's even sponsors it !
I don't think it is disrespectful, it is using land, which would otherwise be left unattended and open to vandalism and druggies using it for their next fix.
As long as bodies are not being dug up to build an office block or a supermarket, I don't see any harm. Spooks me out though on these darker nights, when I am taking the dog for a walk through there.0
