The named driver never has to drive the car, they're just there 'incase' they ever drive it. Unless you're with Swiftcover as they'll let you add completely made up strangers but not your own mum

I was told it costs more if your car is parked on a drive. I'm not sure if it's true as i've always chosen the drive option

Drive or garage does seem to bump the prices up some times. In the garage you're more likely to have a bump seeing as they're all tiny, or drop something on the car. When it's on the drive any potential car thieves know which house it belongs to and can break in for the keys.
  • I passed my test 3 years ago aged 32, I had almost 2yrs insurance no-claims already as I had insured my own car to learn in and that had not cost me too much, roughly £400.
The Car I had was a 1.9 Turbo Diesel Citroen Xantia, a whopper for a first car/learner car but the insurance costs were small. Once passing I let the insurance company know (Quinn direct at the time - now however VERY expensive due to going bust), and they told me that I didn't have to pay any extra - result.
after a few months I swapped to a 1999 Rover SDI diesel 420, which knocked my insurance up to about £560 - The Xantia's suspension was on its way out, shame as it was a lovely car. I think the next year it went up to about £600 and this year it was about £660 - It has never gone down at all since passing my test and that's comparing all of the sites - go compare, meerkat, money supermarket etc..
I had a quick nose around a couple of months ago and now with my no claims approaching 5 years now I was quoted a reasonable amount with the AA, so I may go with them next time as you get free recovery chucked in.

Its funny really as a learner I was paying £400 and now I am 5 years into the good I am paying almost £300 more for a boring old diesel banger :P ah well - recession and all that jazz.

I passed on saturday just gone and am expecting my astra tommorow - paid £450 for it - cheapest quote I've got so far is £1800, most expensive was direct line at over £6000!!! Ideally I'd like to pay about £1400 but I'm getting fed up of filing all the forms out! I'm 24 and female.

Just so you know, the price of your car doesn't matter. You can do thousands of pounds of damage in a £450 car, or a £45,000 car.
What is pi? Where did it come from?

If you had been male I bet the quotes would have been higher.

  • i'm 29 but when i first passed my test at 17 i was in a similar situation and at 17 with no experience insurance costs were massive!!

i ended up buying a new Citroen saxo with 2 years free insurance. my monthly payments were £150 a month. given that i would have been paying that alone on insurance on a banger it worked out cheap and i had a brand new car.

there are similar deals around now ie. Peugeot fuel and go.

i'd say they're worth checking out as it's a great way to build no claims discount.

a few years ago i lost my no claims as i had a motorbike for a while. i was always a named driver on my wifes car which supposedly gives you no claims discount. it doesn't it's a bit of a con, i've just taken out an insurance policy as a main driver, i asked for quotes as if starting afresh and quotes with my 'named driver discount' and there was no difference in price.
  • Did you get quotes with your wife's insurance company or others? the named driver discount is an offer with certain insurers who discount if you take out a policy with them.
