30yrs old - just passed d/test insurance £££££

Options
Hi there - sorry if in wrong forum, first post, so please play nice.

I've just passed my driving test at age 30. Really needed a car for work and social reasons - no idea how I've lasted so long without one.

I'm needing to buy a car that can get me to work (3 miles away) but also to use for work - not likely to exceed 100 miles a week. The problem is even at age 30 being a guy means that my insurance is astronimical - as in 1.5 x the value of any car I'm looking at. I've tried the comparison sites, and Direct Line and Aviva etc, but no better.

Any suggestions. I don't have another named driver available. My occupation is office based (marketing) so I can't see that my occupation is going against me.

It's your lack of driving experience that's going against you. You will find it expensive I'm afraid.
If you will the end, you must will the means.
  • I have been learning off / on for 12 years - such a shame they don't take into account I got my provisional at 18!! Any tips / advice on what cars I should be looking at? Driving people crazy asking them. Realise I should be looking at the usual corsa, fiesta's etc, but not very inspiring...

    A few things to try..

Look at something different than the usual 'starter' cars as they often end up more expensive. Rover, Volvo, 4x4's always come out fairly cheap for me, and i know somebody who insured a BMW pretty cheap as their first car.
Find a named driver. They don't have to drive the car, ever! they just need to be on your insurance
    Increase your excess

Although, if they take it into consideration that you've taken 12 years to pass your test they might stick your insurance up even more.

you could try a classic car? classic car insurance doesn't take into account ncb.
not to sure on any buisseness use though.
think the criteria is the car would typicaly be over 25 yrs old, which would mean it would have to be a 86 c redg or younger.so it wouldn't neceserly have to be a impractical old dog, just off my head i'd can think of ford capri's xr3i saab 900's golf gti's
    just a thought

That's like music to my ears as I really want a BMW but everyone tells me they're too expensive to run.:j And you are spot on - for me at least, for some reason the typical starter cars keep working out far more expensive! I've just heard alot about BMWs being expensive to maintain and repair.

Oh and in my defence, I had a few lessons at 17, but didn;t start again until March this year, so it's not like I've been having lessons constantly for 12 years!!:rotfl:
  • Just tried putting Mummy dearest on the insurance and it cut it by 25% - is that totally legit though? She lives 100 miles away and I'd never let her drive my pride and joy to be!

Get a motorbike...cheap to learn and for tests. Get a nice little 125cc for about £600 (£17 tax, probably £300 insurance 3rd party).

That's what I'm doing just now so I can get rid of my car.

Don't do it - this fronting and could well result in any claim not being paid, and you still need to build up a NCB in your own name.

When getting quotes, don't forget the cashback sites.

Bite the bullet for a couple of years and drive a corsa or the like.

Surely it's ok to put her on as a named driver? OP would be the main driver - there's no reason not to let her drive it up the road and back again! I'm a named driver on my 81 year old mum's policy for the same reason - it reduced the cost by a significant amout, I drive hers a handful of times a year.

OP would still be building their own NCB too.

  • I know what fronting is - thats when you say someone else is the main driver and you're not. I'm just selecting the option for Mummy dearest to drive my ride if she wants to!
