What you're suggesting is not fronting. Fronting would be if the policy was in your mum's name with you as a named driver. Putting her on as a named driver is perfectly legitimate if the policy is in your name. My wife is a named driver on her elderly father's insurance so that just in case he is unable to drive, the car can still be used.
I used to think that good grammar is important, but now I know that good wine is importanter.

I was in the same boat so know how you feel. Try taking pass plus to help reduce the cost a bit?

I'm probably going to do a pass plus, but I would say, having looked into it extensively, even the insurance companies that do recognise the Pass Plus do not really offer much of a discount for completing your pass plus, and most insurers discount by nothing.

Doing a pass plus is more for your road confidence and proficiency than insurance purposes now I think.
  • I've found Tesco (bank not compare) to be the cheapest out there. I'm not newly passed but my situation isn't far off yours. Added my sister as a named driver and knocked up to a 1/3 off!

How much was your quote? I'm a year older than you and my cheapest was £1300 . The cars I used were basic and although inspiring to me , you would probably cry if made to drive one:D

Seat Ibiza , Ford Focus , Ford fiesta were cheapest but I might have to go bigger next year due to a parent's illness.
I've no one to add to my policy and even London based quotes were cheaper than here.
Postcode seems to make more difference than the car sometimes but i've read some smaller cars now cost more to insure as young boys drive them.

Lol - I'm looking at all sorts of cars. I am not really a car snob, not bothered about looking cool having turned up to work and important meetings soaking wet from public transport am way passed that now!

I think postcode does matter a lot, I am hoping that my postcode is pretty safe and the car will be on a driveway or at a secure car park in work most of the time. I think you are right, I have been quite unpleasantly surprised at how much traditionally smaller cars and what must be the lowest insurance groups are so expensive to insure.
  • to answer the reply - most of my insurance quotes are £1500 - £3000 - although my beloved BMW was only £1300 - why I have no idea (and they were all with me as the named driver and no additional drivers)
  • Just tried Tesco - not compare just Tesco Finance... Quote was £8,000 !!!! Excuse my language but !!!!!!!

i used to have my dad as named on mine, he only got taken off because he started costing money and it started getting silly because he was insured on about 5 vehicles (2 of his own, works van, mum's mobility car and mine)
Who remembers when X Factor was just Roman suncream?
  • interestingly on Aviva they ask Please tell us how long you have held a valid UK or European Union driving licence (starting from when you were issued with a provisional licence). You must be able to provide a copy of your driving licence documents if required. Now, I can read, but does this really mean when I got my provisional licence??

if you add an additional driver your BM could come down to under a grand.
