Prams on buses

As I stated in an earlier post, it is not reasonable to expect mothers with babies to fold down their prams for safety reasons. That's the entire point of having pram/wheelchair bays - to make traveling by bus safer for babies and accessible to those in wheelchairs.
Then the "In my day...." posters jumped on the wagon saying how they managed to so why can't mothers today? Well, quite frankly, I refuse to carry my 4 month old baby on the bus for safety reasons. If a pram or wheelchair is in the bay - I will wait for the next bus. If the bay is being used by others - they should move - it is an area for prams and wheelchairs.
And as for all you "In my day....." posters - when I was a child cars were not always fitted with seatbelts. I survived okay. Does that mean my son will travel without a car seat / seat belt? Absolutely not!

My elderly mil had this problem, she was an old lady with a stick, and more than once got abuse as where she lived the seats where the pushchairs went were easier for her to access. To you she would have looked OK, just needed a stick. In fact she was dying from cancer but refused to give in and up to the week she died she was going out doing her own shopping. We lived 200 miles away so couldn't always be there but she was independent anyway. She also had a hip replacement that hadn't worked well and for some reason those seats suited her best. She was told by the bus company that the seats weren't just for wheelchair/pushchair users, the sign meant they were for the disabled as well so she used them but did get abuse.Sell £1500

*confused*
Which part of my post suggests that anyone is not entitled to post?
I'm well aware that it's a public forum open to all and sundry to voice their opinions."Isn't it enough to see that a garden is beautiful without having to believe that there are fairies at the bottom of it too?" (Douglas Adams)0 -
In my opinion if your well enough to get on a bus potter round town and go to the library, go for a scone, drag a huge pull a long trolley about, then get back on the bus you can walk an extra two metres to the next row of seats... OR I can try and ask Charlie (my 8 month old) to crawl and hold on.... not.
Btw, not all young mothers are chavs or children having children. I am 23, extremely happily married for 3 years to my childhood sweetheart who I have known since I was 5, have 3 kids (4, 2 and 8 months) and I have worked on and off, as much as possible and have know started up my own business. And my husband has a full time job with the council, who he worked for, for 8 years.
Just wanted to get it off my chest, not all young mums sleep around and have 10 kids with 8 different Fathers... Thanks for reading0 -

God I hope you end up old with mobility difficulties, socially isolated and only having your "pottering around in the library session" to fill in chunks of your week - and have to run the gauntlet of a bus speeding off as you hobble along to the seats at the back and break your hip... do you realise how utterly selfish you sound? I hope you end up like those elderly people you're criticising and remember just how you shouted them down in favour of "me me me" when you were young.Little miracle born April 2012, 33 weeks gestation and a little toughie!0 -

WOW!
I think some people are completely over-reacting on this thread.
No one is saying the elderly should be made to sit at the back of the bus - simply not in the pram/wheelchair area.

I am not shouting them down, and its not about me, its about my sons being too young to be on a bus without being in the pushchair, its not safe.
Being a young mum I am socially isolated, I also had a condition in my last pregnancy (SPD) where I couldn't walk, (luckily after physio I am alot better and 90% back to myself). So I didn't go anywhere. We had a car then, and I had a wheelchair. But couldnt get out with my 1 year old. So I know EXACTLY what its like thank you! Without you cursing me.
And if I wasnt able to go out, I didn't. I didn't make myself go out and put people out, leave my trolley lying round, tutting and judging people on the bus like what I get when I am out and about.
Their (older generation) families should be looking after them more and helping them out!! And if they haven't got anyone theres volunteer groups out there, online shopping and kindles!
I still stick with what I say though, and I wouldnt have dreamed going out, if I couldn't make it around easily.0 -
Just before I got my new heart I was on a bus with my sister. Sis was standing and I was sitting in the single seat at the very front of the bus, bus was full.
A man in his late 50s got on (no bus pass) and asked me to move, sister said no. So he asked the driver to move me, driver said he couldn't (as me and sis got on with my disabled pass). So the guy started shouting at me that he needed a seat, whole bus was watching when my sister turned round and said "yeah and she needs a heart transplant, doesn't look like either of you are getting what you want today does it".
The look on his face was priceless.0 -

well then perhaps she/you shoud have complained to the bus company on the clarification.
In the majority of Edinburgh buses there are seats at the front prioritised for the elderly/infirm(and IME people will quickly give these up for anyone they see getting on who looks like they need trhem) and a section for pram &/or wheelchair
As usual its the X applys to me and Y doesnt scenario.so only X is worthy0 -

Why not.
I had a new born and an 11 month old and still mangaed to do this by myself quite safely.
Having babies does'nt make you unable to do anything,if anything you have to be more resourceful and inventive.0 -

Good for your sister.
I hope you are better by the way.
Things don't change much though,I always remember being in labour and since the hospital was only ten minutes away I got the bus.
My husband was at work so I took my rather large hospital bag with me.
The bus was full of men going to the football match and not one offered me a seat.
I had my baby 50 minutes later but often wish I'd given birth on the bus:rotfl:,maybe next time those bad mannered men may have thought twice if I had.0
