Unless all the passengers were sitting side by side, which is unusual human behaviour unless you are travelling together, if the bus was half full, the furthest seat from where the old lady was sitting can only have been 3 or 4 rows back from where she originally sat.

If the old lady was worried about moving when the bus had started off, the obvious thing to do was to move while it was still stationery. She was sitting in the only space a pushchair could fit on the bus, in the area with the sign saying reserved for wheelchairs and pushchairs. When she saw the woman with the pushchair boarding, it should have been obvious to her, that the only place on the bus where that pushchair could go was in the slot she was occupying.

The ONLY reason for not moving as soon as she saw the pushchair getting on would be because she intended to be cantankerous and refuse to move from the outset. She clearly was not that infirm and disabled because when the driver told her she had to move she was able to do so.

Were you sitting towards the front of the bus, or at the back? Is there a reason why you didn't jump up and give the elderly lady your seat if you were worried about how far back she would have to go? Or to help the woman with the baby fold her pushchair if you are so insistent this is what should have been. It seems to me, for reasons known only to yourself, you are determined that the mother should have had to struggle with her baby and pushchair down a moving bus or get off the bus completely, even though buses are now designed, for safety purposes, so that women with children are no longer expected to do this. That is the reason why millions of pounds were spent getting rid of the old Routemaster buses in London which weren't suitable for pushchairs and replacing them first with bendy buses and when these failed with modern double-deckers with 2 dedicated buggy/wheelchair places (and NO luggage rack to place folded pushchairs).
  • Theres no way I could fold my buggy down, stop my two yr old boy from running off, sort my shopping and hold my wriggling 8 month old baby. Its also not safe. I couldnt hold them both and hold on to anchor myself down. I think if theres no space, wait! Would you rather fold your buggy down, and crush your baby and have he/she fly through the air in the event of a crash?
Poor old Betty and Bertie can hold on tight where ever they sit, my baby can't. If they can't walk to rows futher down the bus, to be honest how are they going to get round town?

    Exactly Jayne!

As I stated in an earlier post, it is not reasonable to expect mothers with babies to fold down their prams for safety reasons. That's the entire point of having pram/wheelchair bays - to make traveling by bus safer for babies and accessible to those in wheelchairs.

Then the "In my day...." posters jumped on the wagon saying how they managed to so why can't mothers today? Well, quite frankly, I refuse to carry my 4 month old baby on the bus for safety reasons. If a pram or wheelchair is in the bay - I will wait for the next bus. If the bay is being used by others - they should move - it is an area for prams and wheelchairs.

And as for all you "In my day....." posters - when I was a child cars were not always fitted with seatbelts. I survived okay. Does that mean my son will travel without a car seat / seat belt? Absolutely not!

i think that the elderly should have first dips over some chav and her pram i would have written to the bus depo an made a formal complaint of i had witnessed that
Replies to posts are always welcome, If I have made a mistake in the post, I am human, tell me nicely and it will be corrected. If your reply cannot be nice, has an underlying issue, or you believe that you are God, please post in another forum. Thank you

How do you know this mother was a chav? Because she was young?
Made an informal complaint for what - an able bodied, albeit elderly, person being made to move out of the wheelchair/pram section of the bus? That's laughable

I totally agree with Nikkis comments further up this page.
The opposite of what you know...is also true

The bus was only half full - where have I said otherwise? What facts am I altering? The old lady had to go to the back of the bus as the majority of passengers had taken seats near to the front. The only empty seats were near the back.

And had she moved immediately the bus would NOT have been stationary! Our bus drivers certainly don't wait till passengers are seated to move off. Soon as the last passenger boards they are away.

Why on earth should the old lady have moved without being asked as soon as she saw the girl with the pram boarding? She was infirm/disabled and had every right to sit in the first available seat!

technically when she saw the girl with the pushchair she should have moved therefore the bus wouldn't be moving because the girl with the pushchair would be paying the driver

The girl had a multitrip ticket and just flashed it at the driver.

She would still have seen her getting the buggy onto the bus though.

As long as the government keep paying for children to have children, by giving them accomodation and money, this situation will only get worse.
If teenagers chose to sleep with all and sundry, the parents should be responsible for ANY outcome!!.
