Ryanair, £40 fee to print boarding pass at airport - claim back?

a family member had flights booked earlier today, he says he didn't receive anything to advise he needed to print off his boarding passes so he's been charged the £40 per person today at the airport.
check-in told him he can claim this fee back, BUT, surely the onus is on the customer to make sure the T&C's are complied with? even if he didn't receive an email advising you need to print off boarding passes, the info is clearly there on their website, how can a refund be due when it looks like it's his error??
it'll be great if he can get the £160 back, but i doubt it somehow.

Ryanair need the money to stay in business, it is extremely unlikely that they'll get the money back.Posts are not advice and must not be relied upon.0

i have to agree. i've just googled for some more info & it seems it's just another of the 'extras' for an economy airline. not reading/following all the instructions on what to do to complete an online booking, i think will prove an expensive mistake.0

Presume he's going to print off the return boarding passes while he's there (or you could do and send to him?). Probably only need the booking ref and flight details.0

The standard email is as followsTHANK YOU FOR BOOKING WITH RYANAIR
Please do not reply to this e-mail.
YOUR RESERVATION NUMBER IS: C******

i did ask about return boarding passes & it seems to be in-hand, perhaps he'll print them off while he's away, i don't know.
thanks for a copy of the confirmation email, this must be what he's referring to as not being received. whether he did receive it or not, i read on the Ryanair site that an email being sent is classed as being delivered (i can't find the wording again now, but it was pretty clear that saying you didn't receive it would NOT be a valid reason for anything).
basically, 'budget' does not necessary mean cheap if you don't comply with all the T&C's.
thanks for the replies0 -
They also send a "Travel Advisory" e-mail 7 days before travel and then one entitled "IMPORTANT - ONLINE CHECK-IN REMINDER" 3 days before travel.0

Interesting...
Not long ago a court in Spain ruled that this charge was unfair, and I understood that Ryanair responded by refusing to provide boarding passes at the airport. (so that anyone who failed to print in advance would not be able to travel). Maybe that was only in Spain?0 -

They must have put the wrong email address in as Ryanair send about 3 emails with the message about boarding passes in the emails.0 -

Spanish Appeal Court Rules Ryanair’s Boarding Card Reissue Fee Legal0 -
At Valencia last week a Spanish guy came to board with all the info on his iPhone - obviously not accepted but he was not charged the £40 as they quickly took him off to a 'small room' where it was printed off. In addition signs outside the 'duty free' shop at Valencia airport say something along the lines of 'anything bought in this shop can be carried in an additional bag to your normal handbaggage - this applies to ALL airlines flying from this airport'.0
