I'm sure there are some old fashioned nursery style puddings that used breadcrumbs, I can remember treacle tart does but sure there's one along the lines of an Eve's pudding style thing that used breadcrumbs - just in case you fancy something sweet instead of savoury!

Found a few recipes that look nice :)

http://www.baking911.com/recipes/qb/pudding_applebrownbetty.htm - American Apple Brown Betty
http://www.wildyeastblog.com/2008/09/15/the-good-news/ - Fig upside down breadcrumb pudding
http://www.bbc.co.uk/food/recipes/queenofpuddings_85166 - Queen of Puddings - this is the one I half remembered!
And of course there's Xmas pud :)

  • Back home after a lovely weekend in the dales, to be greeted by 4 mouldy clementines, toooooooo mouldy to salvage so in the bin they went, arghh!I guess thats a good part of 69p down the swannie.
I was hoping not to have any waste at all but looks like I might have to say £4 a month to start with.

    4 clementines = 46p :(

Well, it's now 6 days later and no more to report except a manky crust - say around 3p :j. Will be around 1 or 2p to report tomorrow as a Philly Light tub has a bit of mould - not my fault as Mr GG has stopped eating it and I'm on a diet, but will add some to a carbonara type thing which has yet to be invented

ETA - don't be so cocky! 20p on manky Clover spread and 25p on liquid cucumber (hmmmmmmm, face mask????????)

£1.15 with Philly Light to come.

Not braved the Philly yet :o.

    To add:
    6 cherry toms, 20p
spring onion & celery trimmings, say 10p

    Running total - £1.45.

Visited DD yesterday, she is off on a course so I left with 2 pears & 4 pints of milk. Milk out of date tomorrow so stopped off at ex hubbys and gave it to him, not my problem then :rotfl:.To be fair, there are 3 of them so more likely to be used.

  • Have just used up some depressed looking carrots (and onion, potato) to make carrot & coriander soup :) (though I don't know how it tastes yet, hadn't tried recipe before) Must have saved about 50p - 75p there I think. Think I'll hide last two carrots in a pasta sauce tonight.

I need to hunt down more recipes though, everything is ending up as soup!

  • Well, I have to add an end of black pudding, some fried rice and some creamed leeks - had followed a recipe but didn't really enjoy it, and the bits mentioned are those I chucked.

I'll allow about 75p for the above. That's about 3.75 in total for the 1st half of the month.

On the plus side we still haven't done a 'proper' supermarket shop, and we're using up what we have. It's good to know when we next plan for it we will probably buy a good bit less as I'm much more conscious of how little food we actually *need* for the week!

Does anyone have a soup recipe without coriander? I don't have any coriander and have lots of carrots to use. Soup would be ideal for me to freeze for work.

A great site by a real enthusiast and you'll find loads of really good recipes on there. Every one I've tried has been brilliant :)

  • Wow! This thread has been so inspirational. My OH is currently working away, leaving me to work through the vegetable box we get delivered each week and I have been struggling.

However, newly determined not to let anything unnecessary go in the compost
    • I have made a huge batch of ratatouille to freeze,
    • a rather limp looking chinese leaf will be stir-fried with noodles tomorrow
    • the chard and spinach will go in a potato bake
    • the oranges will be turned in to choc orange muffins
    • the apples will become apple and chilli chutney...
My personal challenge is to avoid throwing away £10 worth of food this month
Aiming to be overdraft free by Xmas 2012 - £0/£1800 :xmassmile
