I tried the mock duck in a tin years ago and it was the second most disgusting vegan thing I have ever tasted! (THE foulest thing I've ever tried was the fake 'tuna' by Tuno 🙈 that seriously is just beyond polite description!)
I like mock meats, I have been vegan 15 years and veggie, hmm, is it 13 years before that and I enjoy a nice plant based burger now and then.
I always like a veggie burger with lettuce, gherkins, tomato, mustard, ketchup etc... delish.
I'm with you on the burgers - I can't really eat them in polite company though - end up with condiments all over my face!! 🙈😂
I am still not feeling well so totally can't be bothered to cook today. I just had crackers, vegan cheese and a few black olives for brunch.0 -
I think that you are right Squirrelgirl in people turning to vegan or vegetarian like to have the mock meat products. I remember a couple of years ago a burger which "bled" in the middle was brought out. Just the thought of it put me off, so didn't try it, but assume it was bought for meat eaters who wanted to eat more plant food. I tried some kind of mock fish product a good few years ago, it was vile, would have been better eating the packaging.

I too hate fake meat. I'm allergic to Quorn, it makes me really sick, n hate the look and texture of all the other stuff.I can just about tolerate cold Linda Mac sausages"You can't stop the waves, but you can learn to surf"

When I first gave up meat, I tried all the available meat substitute things that I found in the supermarket, but can’t say I liked any of them, not so far anyway.
Some had a strange aftertaste, not sure what of, but mostly I didn’t like the texture......they were too soft in the mouth. Meat has a bit of chew to it, I suppose, which the substitutes didn’t have.
I tried some not bacon pieces which were the first things that actually tasted of what it was supposed to be substituting, but they were far too salty for my taste.
So I tend to stick to veg being veg, although I’m veggie rather than vegan, so do eat a lot of cheese which peps up many a veg recipe!
(I’ve tried vegan cheese too, but that aftertaste is there again. ???)(I just lurve spiders!)

Strangely enough I was ill with really bad tummy cramps for a few days a couple of years ago, when I was staying on holiday with my daughter and family. I worked out that it was eating convenience foods for a few days, which I am just not used to, as it happened again a little while later, again the only common factor was eating ready made vegetarian or vegan products, so haven't gone near any since. I've never liked burgers ever, so my idea of a burger is portobello mushrooms on a roll with onions and pickles.
Hope that you are feeling a bit better Wednesday.

It's funny as I used to get that feeling sick reaction from Quorn when I was vegetarian but I tried it again when they made a vegan version and I'm fine. It must have been the eggs I reacted to.
I just had a hot and spicy Quorn burger in a bun with salad and vegan mayo. I'm trying the plant based Tesco mayo at the moment. I don't really rate it to be honest.
I think I like the Hellmann's, the Sacla and the Plamil ones the best.
I was about to say that real mayo used to make me feel sick and I just thought that it must have been the eggs too!2025 GOALS

Oh yes, I meant to say about marinated and grilled watermelon. I made that last summer and it was surprisingly delicious.2025 GOALS

An allergy to eggs is quite common apparently. I'm slightly allergic, but not that they make me sick, although duck eggs do, but they are stronger I think. I get along fine with normal mayo.
Can't wait for watermelon season, love them. Never tried grilling, but will try and remember to do that this year. A veggie friend and I usually buy one between us, as we are both on our own, and could never manage to go through a whole one before it went off. Actually, we do that with other things like cabbage and cauli when they are huge, and we can't find little ones at the market.3 -
I freeze watermelon to use in smoothies. You don't want to defrost it, but using it frozen works really well.
I don't think of veggie recipes in burger or sausage shapes as 'fake meat', it's more things that are intended to mimic meat/fish. I prefer to just enjoy food for what it is. But then I'm back to being an omnivore who mostly eats vegetables...3
