I tried seitan in a restaurant in a vegan Italian restaurant in London once. I was looking for the name of the place but it must have closed.1 -
Don't worry Wednesday, you are not alone.1

I’ve only had seitan once, on holiday in Madeira. I hadn’t even ever heard of it, and had to google it. Unfortunately, I absolutely hated it. ☹️
I can eat quorn and soya stuff, tofu, etc., although I haven’t found a lot that I like, but couldn’t bear the seitan.
Of course, it may just be the way the hotel cooked it. Foreign hotels very often aren’t very good with vegetarian food, so it may have been the chef.
What’s the best way of cooking it?(I just lurve spiders!)

I love :eek:2 -
I think the seitan I tried had a weird texture, like squishy. I thought that about the mock duck you can get in the can too. Other vegans I've known love it!
I've seen pictures of other seitan and it looks like some have different texture, like more dense, like bread. Hmm.
I'm making a salad tonight with vegan feta cheese, cuke, olives, tomatoes and onion with lemon, apple cider vinegar and olives oil. Lots of salt and pepper and some mixed herbs too.2025 GOALS

Wednesday, you have just confirmed what I thought about the mock chicken from the Chinese shop was seitan, and reminded me that I had got mock duck at one point too....and was put off by the appearance, although the chicken was ok, but wouldn't go mad for it. It's probably not going to be something that I will make, but not going to save never, and make myself out to be a fibber.
Pyxis, am a bit like you in that I can eat Quorn, soya mince and definitely tofu. I don't go mad for Quorn products, but the mince is fine, and used to buy the plain Quorn fillets to do something with, but was normally daughter who ate the latter. Think that I am just not into really having meat substitutes, or things that look like meat.
Not in the slightest bit hungry tonight, so suspect it will be a picnic plate with oatcakes, pickles/chutney and some definitely not vegan, but vegetarian cheese.

I boil or steam seitan then sometimes bake it- just depends on what I'm doing with it 😉
I tried the mock duck in a tin years ago and it was the second most disgusting vegan thing I have ever tasted! (THE foulest thing I've ever tried was the fake 'tuna' by Tuno 🙈 that seriously is just beyond polite description!)
I think that mock meats are great for people who are relatively new vegans - the structure of meals (meat and two veg type idea) is quite ingrained in many who have transitioned and it takes a while for people to move away from that.
Apart from the time I had my first real success making seitan and went a bit mental, meat substitutes have never been that frequent an item on my menu - however I like to have some stashed for when I fancy a burger or sticky chilli beef 😉

Full disclosure, I'm not vegan (I have been in the past) or even vegetarian, but I do eat plenty of vegan food because I like it
Which is the main reason I don't see the point in fake meat... there is so much fabulous vegan food. I don't bother with stuff like TVP or Quorn, but regularly eat tofu (I like smoked tofu in salads). I haven't tried seitan - I still remember one of my friends saying that there's a reason that it sounds the same as satan...

I like mock meats, I have been vegan 15 years and veggie, hmm, is it 13 years before that and I enjoy a nice plant based burger now and then.
I always like a veggie burger with lettuce, gherkins, tomato, mustard, ketchup etc... delish.2025 GOALS

I'm with you on the burgers - I can't really eat them in polite company though - end up with condiments all over my face!! 🙈😂
