  • Hi :-) we re currently holidaying in a static and the best thing I have brought re food is my slow cooker. I made a portion of spaghetti Bol the day before we came to have for tea the first nt here as pasta is quick to cook and my Bol didn't take too long to warm through. My slow cooker has been used to make stew, curry, spicy chicken pasta and very tasty it has been. We have brought things to have as a packed lunch either to take with us on our outings or like today we just had it in the van before we went out. Breakfast has been cereal and a crumpet- would usually only be cereal at home but hey we are on holiday ;-) just brought the one box of cheap aldi choco pops but sometimes buy the small single portion multipacks if you don't want the same thing each day. Nothing to do with food but something to consider is how cold a caravan can be at the moment. Ours is a one that does have heating in the bedrooms and bathroom but many basic ones may not. Make sure you bring extra stuff to keep warm as even with the extra heaters it has still be rather chilly some days. Have fun on your break x

I am glad I found this thread, we( me and hubby) got a caravan last year and have had a few breaks in it, we have planned a holiday with my three children and partners and three small grand children, they have tents so I thought i would set up a kitchen in our awning so people could help them self's to drinks and food, I will cook a few meals for everyone so the slow cooker sounds a good thing to bring its not till august but I like to plan these things

ps sorry wanna i press spam by mistake

    Hi everyone!

We are going on a caravan holiday next week, Mon - Fri and I'm looking for food ideas to take with us. There will be me DH, DD5 & DS nearly 2. I'm looking for ideas for lunches and tea for us all as hoping to only eat out one night and breakfast on the morning we leave.

I don't want to do a huge shop and take it with us as so hoping to be savvy and only buy what is needed as to save a much money for our actual holiday as possible.

I have cereal & bread for toast for breakfast and Sandwich stuff for lunches on the run, but it's meals I'm struggling with. I want to take some easy, quick and not going to pack the whole kitchen type meals for the whole family.

I'm not wanting to spend the holiday cooking but we are used to home cooked meals so things like ready meals are not an option. I am going to take 2 x small pizzas for tea the 1st night so we can get straight settled and out enjoying ourselves.

Any help would be great xx

I always make a batch of hob nobs and fairy cakes etc for little treats.

I always take some salady bits and a home made quiche plus a bag of new potatoes for the first night

Tea, coffee and milk is a must.

Pasta meals such as spat bol or macaroni cheese, quick and easy

Could you just pop into a local supermarket such as Aldi or Asda when you get there?

Use the local market for fruit, veg and fish
Blessed are the cracked for they are the ones that let in the light

Do you batch cook? We always make an extra portion of bolognaise before a holiday, and take it with us frozen along with a pack of spaghetti. If it defrosts on the way, we'll eat it on the arrival night; if it survives, it goes into the tiny caravan freezer and gets eaten later in the week. I'm actually just realising that we could do the same with chilli con carne, which we batch cook too!!

When we went on self catering many years ago I used to cook a casserole and freeze it....take it out of freezer just before we left andpack it in an insulated box wrapped round with towels....if you can get it into a fridge within 5 or 6 hours it will be nicely thawed for heating on your second day.

That's a great idea, my lot love Spaghetti bolognase & if I freeze it and take it out it can keep the chilled stuff cold too :) we don't really want to go shopping when we are there as it's bad enough taking 2 kids round the shops at home, plus they will just want to run wild and go to the kids clubs and pool straight away.

Trying to think of other things I can take now as DD is not a big chilli or curry fan and DH has just made me put the slow cooker away after winter as said he his casseroled to death ha ha

It might be worth checking online if there are any supermarkets near where you are staying. If you have to shop in campsite shops you can end up with limited choice and higher prices.

I always make a couple of cakes to take with us when we go self-catering. We usually take something like frozen chilli or bolognaise sauce for the first night. We take tea, coffee and sugar and milk. Also a couple of stock cubes , oil , cornflour and soy.

You could take bacon and eggs plus pasta and make carbonara or take a jar of pasta sauce for one night. Corned beef hash is easy to prepare too .

I usually buy pizza or one of them family meal deal things for £6 which have a huge pasta dish for the night we arrive. I put it on, we unpack whilst heating up, eat and then ready to go out .

Other nights we have spag Bol, corned beef hash, crustless meat and potatoe pie and also sausage and mash (frozen). Red cabbage, veg to go with it. I tend to take my slow cooker down so shove everything in morning so I can enjoy myself too.

We also do salad, bread, meats, crisp etc and then fruit, custard for lunch. Buffet style. Instead of using bowls I take some of them silver foil containers so that you can put lid on anything not used for the next day.
Don’t put it down - put it away!
