Paying for it is another thing. People do view these cars as being free. If you look at the maths of it. The government hand out £50 of taxpayers money to a disabled person, then that same £50 goes back to Motability for a car. In other words the government has funded the deal and not the disabled person out of his or her own resources.
If you took that to its logical situation, then all teachers, firemen, policemen, Council workers, BBC workers, Ministers etc etc, all have their money funded by the Government.....:D:D

I choose a Grand C4 Picasso as my mobility car.
Some cars I look at were totally unsuitable for a disabled driver - fancy bar trims around the foot edging meaning it was difficult to climb in, door handles that mean't i had to hold onto the steering wheel to lean out and shut the door.
The scheme is long over due an overhaul. Like another OP said in their post, who needs a BMW or an Audi or a 4 wheel drive monster? Simple basic car for simple basic need, that's what i picked and I recon my £52 a week (£8112 over 3yrs) more than pays for the car.
They sell them at the end of the 3yrs for @ £8000 so my motability money has paid for 1/3 the cost of the car. RRP on my car was £21,250
My car is for me and my needs, hospital appointments, specialist appointments, breast clinic, cancer liason nurse, Maggie Centre visits. I will say i use it to pick my kids up from school so does that break the rules? If so I'll just get my £52 a week back and go buy a used car on HP0 -

Thats your pareticular disability, others have different problems and a car that is notr suitable for you, may be suitable for them or vice-cersa.G51shopaholic wrote: »The scheme is long over due an overhaul. Because not everyone lives in the city centres? that there is a need for a "4 wheel drive monster" in the countryside? That Audis and BMWs have a better risdes for certain disabled people than the cheap and nasty cars? that some who suffer from crippling artharitus need heated seats? that some have a family and need more room for their children? that others need a car suitable to take a fold up wheelchair? again, you are basing your comments on your particular disability.G51shopaholic wrote: »They sell them at the end of the 3yrs for @ £8000 so my motability money has paid for 1/3 the cost of the car. They sell then for different prices i.e. residual value dependent upon the spec, model and other reasons, the same as any other leasing scheme does. As for the RRP, Motability do not buy at the RRP, they get a deal from the manufactureres as the largest leasing company, but so do all other leasing companies. and as a charity do not pay VAT for the vehicles.
The Motability lease car is for the benefitr of the disabled person, and these items you state above are all things that you as the disabled person does as standard, so no, it doesnt break the rulkes. However if you husband used the car to go to work and back then no, for example that is not acceptable and you would be better as 70% do, go down another route.0 -
well, hopefully this wont put a cat among the pigeons lol !! But...
my mobility car, currently a qashqui, is going back in may, and we have been looking at cars .
i have had to stop driving because i can no longer turn my head enough to see safely at junctions, and roundabouts etc, and took that decision because before my recent operation i was pretty bad, and almost caused accidents on more than one occassion , and now my range of movement is even less.
i have degenrative arthritis which affects most of my body, but especially my spine and legs. my mobility has gotten worse over the last couple of years, and the way i am going i will probably need a car which will take me in a wheelchair, whereas at the moment i use a scooter when out. I only go out when someone takes me, so 2 3 times a week if im lucky.
So.. given that my qasqui was 1800 advance rental, i am looking at the top end of the advance deposit this time.
Ive always had this type of vehicle, thinking it was better, but actually, when i am sat in the passenger seat , my legs are bent at the same angle as if i am sat on an upright chair, and this is not the best position for me. At home i have my legs elevated.
well, we have tried out a few cars, and then we went into BMW.
Right at the front of the showroom was a series 1 convertible in shiny red.
'if i can get my scooter in the boot', i said, ' and it is comfortable to sit in, and i could get in and out without too much trouble, i would have that car'...not knowing that it is actually available on the scheme.
we had gone in to look a the x1, and never dreamt that this would be available.
well, its the same price as the other bmw's/ i am happy to pay 2000. i have to change the way i get in and out, but it is far more comffortable with my legs out in front, rather than down.
my scooter fits in the boot, we just have to put the seat on the back seat of the car!:):)
Given that my next vehicle may have to be a completely different type of car to get me in in a wheelchair, i am toying with the idea of going out with a bang!!! lol
any views on the matter?

Only thing I have to say is (I've never had a Motability car by the way), I have Arthritis in my knees, just had two knee replacements, and I had to get rid of my Mini and Mazda MX5 because they were too low to get in and out of. Hubby has a Lexus 4 x 4 which will be similar height to the Nissan and the way I get comfortable for long rides is to put a pillow under my feet, I don't need it all the time but it's handy when I do. My choice of car at the moment is an Audi A1 perfect height for me
But when my Mum was alive, she had severe Arthritis and could just manage to get from the wheelchair into the car with help. The best car I had for her was a Honda Civic (new shape), perfect height and perfect boot for the wheelchair, and not too high to lift the wheelchair in and out.
ML.He who has four and spends five, needs neither purse nor pocket0 -
the bmw convertible isnt that low actually, i was suprised. anyhoo, think it may all be a dream anyway lol !
probably end up with another nissan .
dreaming is my specialty ! lol0 -

They do!!!!! They are all called public servants.
They get paid for doing a job that is part and parcel of the public service.
As regards Motability. The government too fund the vehicle. If you discount any AP, the monthly lease payment is paid for out of the Disability & Carers budget which in turn is funded by the Treasury out of the taxes that we pay.
QED - the Motability lease is paid for by the taxpayers!
That is unless you can show me how it is paid for out of the personal financial reserves of a claimant if you exclude state welfare payments.0 -
Denny_Crane wrote: »Sorry, my mistake. I get obsessed with the automatics (due to having a damaged left foot) I didnt look at the X1 in manual box versions (Duh!)
At the moment I am locked into a Motability car which was my second choice as I did not want to fund any AP into something that was to be temporary.
I have a very good working relationship and have been a long term customer of my local BMW dealership.
As from April I am told that there will be a large selection of the new 3 series coming on board as well as an improvement of the 1 series availablity.
As I have said the only X drive (4x4) X1 available at the moment is the underpowered 1.8. From April they are hoping to allow the uprated 2.0 X drive diesel in either the 180BHP form or the one I want the 205BHP.
The latter is one powerful, low running cost 4x4!
With a max AP of £2000 it will be well worth it.
The BMW dealer has also explained how to get out of the current lease.
So for the Beemers fans, I have been told to watch the space.0 -

Good on you!!!!
I have always had BMW's, new every 3 years when I used to buy my own cars. I just love them.
I even tried the new Z4 a year a two ago, but had to fall out on all 4's after parking it!
Then I tried the X1 4x4 205BHP diesel. What a car, all the bells and whistles, leather, sat nav etc. It actually outperformed my 330 petrol!!
For quality of ride and the pleasure to be in, you can't beat a BMW.
Besides which, try driving 330 miles in a Beemer then try it in a Kia or a Citroen - then tell me there isn't any difference.
The conv 1 series is a lovely car with one drawback - the lack of rear seat room.0 -

No way!!! Get what you want!
Believe me you will feel a million dollars just sitting in it, never mind kicking up dust on a country road with the roof down in the summer.0
