When I was at university I was paid £35 for spending an hour or so one evening as a part of a consumer focus group. We were paid in Scottish money, which is always a pain.

Anyhoo, I commented on the poor quality of the bread and the irritation with them only having trolleys - the lack of staff I assume helps reduce costs - but that the remainder was very good value. So far they haven't introduced baskets (we were told this was to do with the 'philosophy' of Aldi) and the bread still looks second rate. However, their pizzas are good - apparently they were 1st for good supermarket pizzas - and some of their wines and beers are very good value.

Nowadays, I still go there to pick up fresh fruit and vegetables and some of the delicatessan-style goods and other continental oddities, but couldn't do an entire shop there without restricting my diet considerably.

Their village bakery bread is quite nice, it's always been really fresh. Ours sell warburtons too which i think ois £1 a loaf.
  • My mum and I have started shopping at Aldi's more often than we used to because their products are just so good value for money. Your posters are absolutely rights, it's not just good quality good, it's good value for money.

You can do a really good weekly shop in Aldi's. You may need to go to one of the leading supermarkets to get certain products that Aldi's doesn't stock like a lot of herbs and spices, toiletries, such as deodarants, and shampoos if you prefer the branded stuff but apart from that Aldis fruits, vegs and meats are very good quality. I disagree with one poster that said that the meat looks bad quality. I can tell you that it's not. I buy fresh chicken and meat from Aldi and they are very good and I've always been more than happy.

Aldi's milk is good, the diary products like butter and cheese is good. Obviously you wont get as much choice as other leading supermarkets, but the choice that they do have is good and it's value for money.

I think you should definately take the leap and do a shop at Aldi's. I promise you won't regret and you'll be pleasantly surprised. Just remember to take some bags with you as you have to pay for their carrier bags.

    Good luck.

I love shopping in Aldi. They opened one up in my town and I go there more than I do Mr T's. The quality of fruit and veg seems to be better and nearly almost all of their stuff is as good as branded foods. This time of year is even more yummy as they do a fantastic iced christmas cake :Tand all the other goodies that are out this time of year. Bang goes my healty eating for the rest of the year:rotfl:
Looking for bargains anywhere i can :hello:
  • I find Aldi great for most things, and the meat is good- I have bought mince, chicken- fresh and frozen, gammon, ham, bacon and the thin steak there. Tinned and frozen stuff is good too. They also have some great Christmas bargains. The only thing I can get cheaper tends to be paper goods-loo rolls and kitchen roll- Poundstretcher or Home Bargains tend to be cheaper, tho I can't fault Aldi's quality. Have a look on line to get their twice weekly deals.

I've tried to do a full shop at Aldi, but ours dosn't stock some of the things we buy. For example, what we call snacking fruit - dried apricots, prunes, dates etc. So if I went to Aldi, I'd then have to go to Sainsburys or where ever to get other things.

Also, the fruit and veg in our Aldi just dosn't last. I have tried a few times before but have had to chuck away some of it as it has gone over. I didn't buy more either just because it was cheaper.

Apart from the fruit and veg in our Aldi, the quality is excellent and would always recommend them.

Aldis does stock dried fruit, herbs, pepper etc - its just not where you think it would be!! In the two aldis I go to, the dried fruit is with the baking stuff - flour, sugar egss etc. This is also where you find the pepper and herbs. The only downside to aldis (and its not a major thing) is that sometimes the stock is in mixed boxes, so you might have to pick up 4-5 jars of jam (all in the same box) to find the raspberry one. As someone else said, yes certain things you can buy cheaper in any of the big 4s value range, but the quality is no where near as good. Personally Im very picky about bin bags, the smart price ones in asda are totally awful, but for about 10p more I can buy really good, thick, quality bags from aldi. As for cleaning products, the washing up liquid is fab, and the bathroom cleaner (65p a bottle?) is probably the best stuff I have ever used.

we popped into both aldi and lidl over the weekend. we were really taken by it, maybe it was just the novelty but we are going to try and do our shop at the weekend there. we are lucky as there is an aldi and lidl over the road from each other so will walk round both and see what we can get then if anything is missing pop into one of the big 4 for that. my main issue is i work for a supermarket so i get 10% so wether the "discounter" stores are going to be cheaper im not sure for me.

LOL! Its not unusual when shopping at my local Aldi to find someone in adsa or tresco uniform scurrying around the store doing a weekly 'shop'. they usually look a bit sheepish - but willingly tell you that its either cheaper or they wouldn't touch 'thier' stores version with a bargepole!

i have started doing my shopping there, cant believe how cheap it is as the quality is really high

I spent £55 and had a £5 voucher, couldnt believe how much stuff I had in my trolley as would have cost about twice that at Sainsburys where I usually shop

I bought a tin of beans and sausage for OH but he wasnt very keen said he preferred heinz, however everything else we have had has been really nice.

I bought a free range chicken for £5 usually pay more than that, and the free range eggs were really nice and only about 90p

I will definitely be doing a shop here every week and will prob pop to one of the other supermarkets once a month for the branded stuff that we like, such as Knorr stockpots and Bisto gravy granules etc

When we want to do a cheap shop we go to Aldis. A weeks shop, excluding some meat usually comes to about £40-£50, whereas it is about £70 at Sainsburys. As mentioned, the chicken breasts are very good, and a good price (usually £5 for 4 large breasts). Their beef products don't tend to be very good though, you can never find a half decent steak in there. Otherwise, all the groceries are half the price and just as good.

Problem is nowadays, especially in this town, is it's seen as a cheap shop that only immigrants go to, so that puts people off if they're a bit snobby :P
