I've just tried doing my weekly shop at Aldi and on the whole it was a success and significantly cheaper than Mr T.

The small issues I had (that wouldn't stop me going back).... I only needed one red onion but they only sell bagfulls, I only need a small bottle of milk and they only sell the bigger ones in my store, bananas only come in prepacked bags and although they were cheap some would go to waste for me.

Everything else was ok for my needs - its worth a try!

I bought a tin of beans and sausage for OH but he wasnt very keen said he preferred heinz, however everything else we have had has been really nice.

But is that just because his perceptions are that the food should not be nice/good quality, i.e. had you not told him that they were Aldi's own, he would not have batted an eyelid?

I think this is what a lot of people suffer from, almost a brand snobbery, because we are so brainwashed by British marketing to believe that we HAVE to have branded goods, that people think anything else is somewhat inferior.

I posted earlier on another Aldi thread (and no, I am not paid by them/work for them) that I think Aldi and likewise Lidl have some fabulous products - Lidl can be a bit hit and miss and we tend to only go there for 'bits' (oh, and the wine!) as it's at the end of the road.

My parents started shopping at Lidl and Aldi years ago after we visited friends in Germany and they introduced us to the chain there. And the Germans are miles ahead, like they were doing the whole resuable bags thing when we were over there in the early 90's, sadly here in the UK we are just about getting our heads round this.

Aldi are now doing 'snack nuts' (we've been in there today & I nearly got some). They had like a pumpkin seed mix with sunflower seeds, along with other fruit & nut type mix packets. All around 99p.

You can do your weekly shop in Aldi, but like everything else, it pays to keep an eye on 'offers' and things generally elsewhere. I sometimes get a branded soap powder if it's on offer, although on the whole I use Aldi's stuff regularly. I tend to top up for extras in the discount shops: Heron, Cool Trader, Home Bargains, B&M, etc, too.

One last thing... the baby nappies are brilliant in Aldi. We tried all the branded ones when our little one was born and I avoided Aldi/Lidl because I thought they would be rubbish (we are talking before I actually started shopping at Aldi for my weekly shop) however we started shopping there after LO was born, and we found their nappies to be the best in terms of absorbency, comfort. They were rated Gold in one of the baby mag's mother & baby awards, too!

no not snobbery he said the sauce was thin, I did buy a full weeks shopping there and we are happy with everything else and I will definitely be going every week

I saved a fortune compared to my usual Sainbury shop and as we also thought that everything was really good quality we will be doing our shop at Aldi from now on. I have agreed to buy the beans and sausage elsewhere although as he only eats about one tin a fortnight isnt going to make much difference to my spends.

i like ALDI for certain things, maybe beans etc, but i dont feel i can do my entire shop there.
it is just not as appealling as Morrisons etc.
Mind you their dog food is good.

but at the moment i am not on a budget.
( maybe in the future i will look more closely at ALDI

I bought their Earl dog food this week for the first time and the dog had a go at it tonight - absolutely wolfed it down and pushed his bowl around the kitchen wanting more. This was the pack of 6 tins for about £2.39 I think.
I compared it with his normal branded food and it actually contains more meat so that can't be a bad thing.

I cant fault Aldis cat food either. My last cat Nicki was FIV and tended to lose wieght on the 'expensive' branded foods. So I thought , Sod it, lets try Aldis as I shopped there anyway.
Their little 'tray' foods, were a great success! he wolfed those down, so we tried the sachets (cos there was more in them), again he loved most of them, esp the ones in gravy or the seafood ones..............it got so that when we brought the shopping home the cat would come and check out the bags to make sure we had 'His' food! we used to buy one box of sachet food and about ten of the little trays and it came to less than £6! from then on his wieght stabilised. and he seemed to really enjoy the food!

    Hello,
I used to live in germany, and shopped aldi + lidl all the time. Shop there every week, can't do a full shop, but majority of shop I do. My kids tell me if something is good or not. It is def a case of trial & error. But it does save a lot, and I have to weigh up things like saving money against tesco vouchers.
Thier ham/yogs and cheese items are much nicer then other shops, and a lot cheaper.
My kids love thier fruit juice from the fridge.
    have a nice day
  • I am a total convert. The fruit and veg are really good quality. I love that you can buy a free range chicken for under a fiver. The washing up liquid (original) was not far off Fairy in the Which magazine and half the price.

A pack of Oatie biscuits for 45p that taste just like hobnobs, digestives for 30p(ish) that taste just like digestives and ginger nut biscuits for 30p(ish) that taste just like ginger nuts.

My favourite shower gel normally £2 is sold in ALdi under a different name for 89p. (No my skin hasn't burnt off or developed boils. Looks, smells and feels the same)
We start our shop there first. graduate to A**a if needed then to the Basics range at Mr M or Mr S if needed.
  • I'm not sure we could shop full time there, we don't have one locally but we do go each fortnight and stock up on frozen chips and fruit and veg, and their cheaper brand alchol just for mixing in milk for a bed time drink is far more palatable. Their pizzas are OK for the price, I haven't found the perfect frozen pizza yet.
  • Went to Aldi on Friday, was going to buy their chicken, frankly it looked rank, so didn't bother, I do like their washing up liquid though, sandwich bags and tins of fish:p
