Wow... People really do this?

I popped into Sainsbury for a few bits for lunch and decided on some fresh fish.

The fish counter has a sign saying "Free marinades or butter with fish" which is a nice touch, saves you having to hunt around the store for a suitable sauce. You can then cook the fish in the bag that they give it to you in, complete with the butter or marinade.

As I am on the Dukan Diet I asked for the butter to be separate from the fish as I would not be having any but my culinary victim would.

Lady behind the counter said that the store policy is not to separate them as they have had too many people ordering fish in order to get free butter (each piece is about the size of a Quail's egg btw) and leaving the fish hidden around the store and leaving with the butter.

Words failed me.

Is this a problem anyone else has heard of, or is it time for me to move?

I can believe it ... Just look at the Grabbit board for the way some people go after 'freebies'.

Seems like an awful lot of effort to go to, to get a tiny nugget of butter. Maybe they should start selling the pats of butter separately ...

I can't understand the motive for doing this. Surely it would be theft? The butter is given to them "free" on buying the fish - if they haven't bought the fish the butter isn't theirs. A bit like taking two items off the shelf in a BOGOF deal, leaving one item somewhere and trying the claim the second should be free at the checkout, or worse not showing it at all! No sense at all - I'm not sure I believe people are doing this - perhaps the lady fishmonger was trying to find an excuse for a stupid policy?

There used to be a good number of people on these boards that would search around Tesco for receipts where people had not used a Clubcard. The individuals would then take them to Customer Service and have them added to their account. Some people can stoop pretty low for very little reward.

I guess what I am saying is: If someone is going to do this why not just shoplift the butter - because I can't see the difference?

there is no difference, yes they are effectively not paying for the fish with the butter but taking the butter and leaving the fish behind. It just seems alot of hassle for a piece of butter.

Just to clarify, the butter and marinades were not within public reach, you have to ask for them.

Apparently the worst single event in Sainsbury A10 retail park, to date, was £30 of fish stuffed on a shelf somewhere which was then obviously thrown out.

Could it not be the case that the shoppers having got the fish in their basket realise they can't actually afford it or have simply changed their mind ? It seems a lot of faff just to get some free butter ?

Quite possibly, but with some of the recent posts on here, like the one about the "Moshi Monsters" a while back, I do wonder......
