Your post's have neither been helpful or accurate sunnyone. Where have you pointed out the truth? Other than to try and belittle my orginal post. Then you try and insult me further by saying a child doesnt just catch ADHD. I know that. Shes been in the system since she was 7. Shes never been a 'normal'child. if someone posts for advice about a serious issue then why doubt a diagnosis? She hasnt just got ADHD, she's also got ODD and an eating disorder. Not that long ago we thought she could have a brain tumour. I dont come on here expecting my hand to be held, but I do expect a bit of compassion. The fact you are insulting my child and her diagnosis makes me feel sad for you. You havent given me any help whatsoever. This may be a public forum, but this is my thread, about my daughter. Take a hint and take your vile nastiness to another thread.

I was eventually diagnosed and the diagnosis has explained a lot but my Aspergers certainly isnt a disability but a gift.

Well at least it goes some way to explaining the bluntness.

You're definitely in the minority with the part I've highlighted.

Let's just say it's not the first time ...

I hope you get things sorted out, sounds like you've been messed about a lot. All the uncertaintly and different rules cannot be good for your daughter.

As you will now be aware there are 3 levels of support for children with SEN in schools. Given the number of professionals involved your daughter should be on SA+ as a minimum.

I would suggest that you book another meeting with the SENCO with parent partnership attending. You need to get them to get her SEN assessed - this could involve an Educational Pyschologist/paed/occupational therapist/physch etc etc assessing her. She is not able to access her education at the moment if she is constantly not able to focus. It is not right if she is simply disciplined for her restlessness. An occupational therapist or the SENCO can provide things like a wobble cushion which mean that she can still move around but not be actually moving IYSWIM.

I am very angry on her/your behalf that they are not already taking these steps.

Thanks Chivers. Im going to ring IPSEA first thing Monday and Parent Partnership also. Its half term next week so all I can do is email the headmistress and the SENCO. This is a SENCO who my daughter hasnt seen for 6 months.

Why does it have to be such a battle?

I am so sorry that you are having all this trouble and stress. It IS a battle and when you are already worn down with looking after your child you barely have the energy to get through the day without trying to work with this system. You are doing all the right things, the system can eventually work to our children's benefit and they can flourish once the right support is in place.
Hang on in there.....I have been through it and emerged the other end with a happy, fulfilled son. He is working towards as much independence as he can manage (his disabilities are different to your daughters) and gets all the support he needs.
Don't give up, you are going to need to be strong.....use all the help you can get. Parent Partnership was new to this area when i was going through the system and they only got involved late on but they were really, really helpful. Also friendsin similar situations were a great source of strength for me as was the local Carers charity. Would they be able to help you perhaps?
Your daughter is lucky to have such a wonderful parent who is determined to get the best for her. i know how hard it is and you deserve a medal.
    All the very best.

You dont get to your teens and develop ADHD, they are present from birth and become apparent when they are toddlers and are picked up very quickly once they start school so if she was normal until 18 months ago she cant just suddenly "catch" ADHD.

that's very true BUT in my experience parents are told everything's OK when they raise concerns and all it takes is a rubbish school and suddenly a child is in secondary school and struggling.
my teen was dx with autism + dyspraxia at 13 yrs old . the junior school she want to always belittled my concerns and said she was the way she is because i mollycoddle her !
a wonderful SENCO saw there were issues and set the ball rolling and today she is a relatively happy [as happy as a teen gets !:rotfl:] teen ,she was statemented and now attends a SN school.:D

I agree with you that some schools are rubbish and try to make excuses as to why the child is diffrent but a child with ADHD is usually know to SENCO long before secondary school, thats why I aske the OP how long her daughter was under investigation before dx.

Statementing is the way to go with the child this thread is about, it will protect her and give both her and her mum legal rights which makes it much more difficult for the school to fluff them around.

Some schools now refuse to statment educationally normal/superior kids, they lie and say statementing is for educationally subnormal kids only so parents are having to fight for their rights which is wrong, I was "lucky" that my child was so bad no one could claim they were "normal" so they were statmented at 5 without any problems what so ever, ADHD was dx'ed at 3 and dypraxia was dx'ed at seven but both dx's were dont without any drama by our wonderful pead.
  • I agree many school are completely rubbish at helping with children with ADHD / ASD Disorders and often just try to coast them to get them out the other end without costing them too much money. It stands to reason, that many of these kids are not given a diagnosis as the schools are often asked for a report and those reports often say there is no issue, or behind a smoke screen blame the parents for what they see as behavioural issues, and not the signs of not coping with a need that isn't being met. Even with a diagnosis of ADHD and / or ODD many children are being failed.

I would advise looking for a better school who do have an understanding of the condition. At 15, there is not enough time to go down the fighting the school route, unless you are prepared for another year to slip by. So sad she is being failed by the school.
  • I'm a SENCO and am shocked and disgusted that your child is being treated in the way that you describe. I really don't know how, in this day and age, how some schools can behave in such a matter.

Your daughter should already be on an IEP and once outside agencies are involved, should already be at 'School Action Plus'. The Statementing process regarding collection of evidence should also have been started. Believe me, there is an awful lot of work involved in this which makes me think that perhaps they are stalling, in the hope that your child would have left school before they are asked to comply.

With regards an IEP, these are reviewed termly. Targets are set and you have a right to be invited to the review. Reviews should not be held without your knowledge and invitation. If there is anything on the IEP that you disagee with, you are within your rights to demand that it be removed. You are also within your rights, to suggest targets to be included.

I am appalled that you are being left to arrange any liaison meeting with outside agencies, that is part of the SENCO role!

With regard to your next move, as the School have been less than helpful, come tomorrow morning I would be phoning the LEA (SEN Dept) and inform them what is happening and ask their advice. They have a Statutory Duty of Care and are best placed to advise you.

If there's any further advice I can offer, please do not hesitate to pm me.

    Good luck.
