  • To all contributors who can honestly say they've never bought anything after watching an advert, I salute you.

However, advertisers don't always advertise their product to induce a stampede of people to rush out to buy their product after seeing their advert once or twice. More often than not they advertise to increase their brands awareness, and they know that if they continue to do so over a long period people will be drawn to their product over the course of time - they'll trust the brand and will be prepared to pay extra as it has a perceived higher quality.

If you don't believe me think about how many times people (not everyone, but a big chunk of us) buy branded items in the supermarkets when there is little or no difference other than price between the branded item and the supermarket's own brand.

They're sly little critters, these companies.....
  • I don't like TV adverts but have bought two christmas presents for my daughter of the back of them. Sadly there are a lot of adverts for toys on the channels that she watches. I try to tell her that they are just trying to sell us something. When I say we can't afford something she asks me if we are 'in debt' another type of advert that bomabards us on our telly. For myself I don't normally believe any adverts that are making great claims so don't really buy anything that is aimed at adults.

I can't remember the last time I saw an ad on TV, as we always record what we want to watch (on a good old-fashioned VCR, we haven't got Sky+ lol) and fast-forward through the ads. In the unlikely event that there should be a time when we want to watch something when it's actually broadcast, my DH would use the Mute button during the ad breaks.

I also don't *just* watch the TV, I always do something like cross stitch at the same time, so my attention isn't fully on what I'm watching in any case.

Advertisers must hate people like me!:D

  • I 'very' nearly bought one of those 'ahhh bras' until I googled reviews and found out they were not what they reckon to be lol

  • About 30 years ago, there was a marmalade-on-thick-white-toast ad. Think the catchphrase was "le crunch". It looked so good, biting into it. Despite my preference for red jam and wholemeal bread, I ran out to buy the necessary, and still do, now and again. Yum!
  • i don't buy from ad's, i think it's because i am too engrossed in what is happening in the ad itself. i'm more of a re-marketer. because i love ads so much, i'm always asking people if they've seen certain ones. so they do their job in promoting company name, but i'm never a buyer.

i also pull some ads to bit cos they are pure garbage. we all know the ones, which have nothing to do with anything...usually perfume ads. i do, however, LOVE the dairy milk ads. completely random, but i feel it's because they are a big enough name, and you can't really advertise chocolate any other way than the pretentious perfume way. completely out of the box advertising there, love it!

I tend to block out adverts but did like that Waitrose one with chickens and roosters running wild.

There's lots of backdoor advertising on forums these days, with people being ever so helpful about a great product from a great product, and providing a website link. At every opportunity. Or fake reviews - I once stumbled across a review on a reputable company's website, which had my name and county on a review of a product that I had bought but certainly hadn't written a review for!

The only adverts that have tempted me are the M&S food ones yum.
I love the ad where the muddy dog jumps on the white bedding but can't remember what they were advertising. I loved the smash spacemen as a child and there was a cute AD for sandwich paste in a jar which no one in the world seems to remember except me. I watch the face cream ones to see how many they have been tested on and usually it's under 200 people, yeah i am really going to spend £'s on a face cream that they spend hundreds of thousands of pounds advertising but can only be bothered to test on a very few people, i stick to aldi's £2.99.

The picture of a gorgeous chocolate pudding and wording, along the lines of "It’s a good feeling isn’t it, giving in?" REALLY made me want one! :o
