The one that makes my skin crawl is people preparing food without taking their rings off. There's a huge amount of dirt and crud gets stuck under rings and handwashing does nothing to remove this unless you take your rings off to wash underneath. Anyway, who wants scone mix and meat juices etc stuck in their jewelry? Nail polish would be sterile enough but not extensions or tips, which come into the same class as rings imho.
As to tying hair back while cooking that's just basic hygiene, same as washing your hands before preparing food. And if you've got long nail tips, you need to use a nail brush to get any crud out from under them too. Surely everyone knows to do this? Please tell me there's no-one reading this that preps food with unwashed hands?[/QUOTE]
Sadly, as some earlier posts on this thread indicate there are people who think that basic hygiene in the kitchen doesn't matter.
If I visit any cafe, pub or restaurant which looks grubby or the food arrives with dirty cutlery or on chipped plates, I just walk out and never visit it again. Same with staff who come to serve you and stand there itching their nose or picking at their nails while they wait for you to place your order. I just leave.
And this is soooo funny.
So because some people when cooking at home (or on TV) don't take their nail vanish off and don't tye their hair back (what do people without long enough hair do? I suppose they wear a net every night when cooking dinner - well, each to their own) you are now suggesting that people would accept sitting in a restaurant and watch cook/waiter to picking their nose and think it is normal!!!

Seriously, this is taking this discussion too far.0 -
Though thinking about it I do have my hair tied back all the time at home... more because it annoys me in my face with my head down, however would I to go on the TV I would want to look as pretty as possible..
I don't take my nail vanish off though. Not that I wear it often. But never yet did my nail varnish ended in my food.
Oh and rings I always take off. Who would want to spend an hour cleaning the dough off them afterwards!!0 -
How the hell did we get from not tying hair back did we get to not washing hands before cooking????????????
This is getting ridiculous. No one ever said that.
Because it's basic hygiene when you are preparing food.
Kirstie made a big thing of saying how fastidious the judges were and what high standards they expected so we are only following on from what she has already said.
Tying hair up, washing your hands (as Justamum pointed out) and removing rings etc is no big deal and for some of us is automatic when preparing food.
I'm beginning to understand now why teachers have been complaining that small children at school cannot blow their nose properly, wash their hands or even eat food using a knife and fork. If their parents don't bother, why should they?:rotfl::rotfl::rotfl:0 -
Best cushion? And then Best In Show? I don't think so. It's all supposed to be anonymous and then they announce "and the winner is Kirstie Allsopp" . Surely they should say "Will the winner of Item No 3 step forward for their prize."0

I didn't think Kirsties cushion was the best, I thought highly commended, (that was sooo pretty!) 3rd and 2nd were better. Just my opinion though. It looked from the scoresheet that Kirstie got 100 marks, can only assume that there was lots of detail which didn't show up too well on TV.
I really love her house though..... And it's flower arranging next week which I like to have a go at myself so must remember to watch.0 -

Stewards not judges reassociate the entry numbers with the entrant names so that the judges judge anonymously. The stewards have the details of entry names and entry numbers to make this association. It would be possible for a judge to look them up in a show catalague I suppose, but ....to what end?0 -
