I would love to enter competitions but despite living within 50 miles of both Devon County and Royal Cornwall I can't find out how to enter either. There are also loads of smaller shows round here which seem equally mysterious!

Are you anywhere near Chagford? This is the schedule for this year's competition (which is obviously finished) but at the bottom there are contact details for people who might be able to help. http://www.chagfordshow.com/pages/classes/horticulture.html

If she wins anything this week, then it's defo rigged.......

It doesn't look like Channel 4 did their own competition at this show. I thought that the shortbread all had to be between 1/4" and 1/2" deep. Most of them were well over that.

The moral with most of these shows appears to be to stick to traditional - the judges are a bit stuck in their ways.

I loved that scarecrow and I'm glad they got 2nd Prize.:)

Sorry to bring it up again but the hygiene aspect still leaves a lot to be desired. There was Kirstie, yet again, arranging freshly baked stuff (in the show tent) with her hair hanging all around her and using her fingers to slide her shortcake into a poly bag.

It clearly was meant to be of a certain standard of cleanliness because they were told to put things on paper plates and then to have items covered with a poly bag.

    Next week it's sausage making;)

Very stuck in their ways. I would have been tempted too to try something a bit different but deep down most people realise the judges are looking for traditional country fare, which looks good and tastes good and at the same time adheres to all their rules. It's all about "standards".

Talking of exacting standards - a neighbour of mine is in the WI and the rules for stuff she makes are incredible.

She had to make a knitted brooch and asked my advice and I kept coming up with ideas and then she'd say "Oh it's not got to measure more than so & so" and "I can only use 2 colours" "It mustn't be backed with anything" ......... it just went on & on and I thought what's the point?:(

I'm enjoying the series, I am envious of Kirstie and her looks/home/equipment/everything. I'd love to be able to craft to a high standard but my budget generally doesn't allow it at the moment... (gone are the days spending £20 on wool was a weekly occurrence, eek!)
I had always thought I'd join the WI or something similar as I got older but now I don't think they'd have me!!!
    November £5 a day challenge: £223.16/£150
    December £10 a day challenge: £279.00/£310
Started comping too - no luck yet!

i think thats the whole idea of programmes like these, to make even [STRIKE]tight wad[/STRIKE] die hard money savers spend money on stuff they don't need. its just another 'niche market' after all.

    *getting old and cynical* :p

I'm really enjoying the series, I think she has a lot of guts to put herself on the line like this, and I admire her for it. Its given me several ideas for crafting that I'm following up, the tension tray was interesting last night, something I'd really like to have a go at .... <<goes off to cost supplies>>
... don't throw the string away. You always need string! :D

I'm giving that episode a miss. I'm a vegan so I don't want to watch her chopping and mincing _pale_

I was only remarking last night on the lovely bowls she has. I've got plastic ones. I did have one of those traditional Mason Cash cream and brown bowls, but I dropped it on the floor  I'm going to have to save up for another one.

I'd love to be able to craft like that too, and I enjoy making things, but my problem is that I have no creative imagination. I'm a member of the Embroiders' Guild and enjoy the workshops, but it's easy then because I'm just doing what someone else is telling me :rotfl:
