  • I'm enjoying the programme, and it's good to have craft based things out there, but I don't understand how she thinks 30mins of work (with masses of help anyway) can compete against someone who's spent hours and hours really putting the effort in. I do kind of see her as a very wishy-washy crafter, she talks the talk but seems to prefer to buy handmade than actually do much herself is the impression I've got from watching all her shows.

Pleased the kids came second, and that by the end she stopped saying 'our' scarecrow and instead 'the kids' scarecrow, which I thought was more the truth!

I enjoy watching the show and it has opened my eyes to other crafts Id like to try, I really fancy making the rosemary shortbread and the lavender one, but not sure it would get eaten, actually I would like to try nearly all of them, but I wont be watching the sausage making next week either.

Just before last Christmas our local woodland trust or may have been wildlift trust had a childrens morning making willow wreaths and fatballs for birds, in the middle of one of the local woods, it was snowing and everyone was freezing but it was a brilliant time for kids and adults, I still have the basic willow wreath I made and Im going to use it again this year, Im hoping they do something similiar this year as GD1 really enjoyed it, we all had hot toddys, hot choc and warm coridial for the kids, it was voluntary and free (but we gave them a donation) and everyone had a good time!!

I don't understand the comment re 30 minutes of work against hours and hours; she has an expert show her how to do something, then she does it again on her own

she did all the sewing, embroidery, felting herself, made the cakes herself (the day and evening before the competition), made the shortbread and cordial herself; iirc the only thing she didn't make after the session with the expert was the tension tray, and she made that by copying what he was doing anyway

... so if I want to make something to enter in a competition how can I learn the new craft if not by taking advice, taking a course, reading a book or being shown how to do it?

I wish this thread could be more about the crafts and less about the dratted woman

I am loving the series - it's even made some of my friends interested in my weird and wonderful crafty ways. And I have finally found a craft course that's in the evenings - patchworking, which is something I've always wanted to do. My joints are forcing me to give up my beloved dancing, and most crafty courses are in the evenings, so I'm really looking forward to it. And I might meet some other folk who are old beyond their years!

Well I won't be making brawn, or sausages or pork pies but I enjoyed the programme.

Looking forward to the christmas shows over the next 2 weeks too.

  • I used to enter shows and rarely won any of the baking - they are looking for very traditional produce and i made vegan items :-)
Regarding the very strict criteria for handicrafts, it's to level the playing field - how creative can you be making a brooch of a certain size with two colours, etc? It makes them "judgeable" as all the elements are the same.

I love Kirsty!! there I said it - she is doing her bit to show us things we never get to see. However I did have to suffer my Mums oft repeated 'tale of the brawn she made' and tonight it was 'pigs heads are really expensive now, they used to be less than half a crown' till I reminded her that was a while ago, maybe decades ago :rotfl:

I have thoroughly enjoyed the series because it was different and appealed to me, I was rooting for her to win too. So now we have to wait for her Christmas show......anyone know when?

She's got Kirstie's Homemade Christmas on next Wednesday, which has confused me somewhat - according to this week's Radio Times it was episode 7 of 8. I didn't watch this one because I'm vegan, and the visuals, to be honest, really didn't appeal :D Did they say at the end that it was the last in the series?
  • Well, I've thoroughly enjoyed the series. To be able to watch a programme encouraging creativity, with a bit of competitiveness thrown in with plenty of innocent giggles makes a refreshing escape from the doom and gloom of 'The News' (the Eurozone and the Banks....). Having entered our local village show, the standard is high and the tension as the judges finish and the competitors are allowed in to see the results is quite remarkable. One memorable year, we'd not long lived in the village, we all flooded into the main marquee to check for little red or green cards. Over at the jams and pickles, I could see a group of women eagerly scanning the jars and a gasp went up as one lady (perhaps triumphantly) held up a disqualified rivals comment card and read out loudly...'Wrong size jar....'
