Christening....which religion.....

Where did you get married? Just asking as I would have thought staunchly RC people like your ILs would have wanted their son to marry in a Catholic church and it used to be the case that you were then asked to fetch the children of the marriage up as RC too (don't know if that is still the case). If that's the case, it would answer your question about which Church to have child baptised in. However I wouldn't do it solely to 'honour' your late Grandparent's beliefs, they were hers.0

You don't mention faith or belief in God once in your whole post OP. Surely that is rather a large component of being part of a religion.... no?? Obviously your baby can't voice either of those things them self and I would be inclined to wait until they could, rather than forcing membership of a cult upon them out of misplaced guilt. (although from what i hear joining a religion now could put you ahead in the stakes for getting a place at a decent state funded faith school down the line - much to my disgust!)0

I thought this was a 'joke' thread when I read the title!
you arent particularly religious - you go to church on the odd occasion - but you have absolutely NO understanding of the religion. yet you think that your child should be christened but not sure which religion??????????????
I am NOT a christian - but this strikes me as strange to say the least.
I have no problem with religious people - I respect that they have a belief system (so do I but its not christian) and christians feel the need for christenings. you have no belief system - its plain from your post - so why on earth do you want to christen your child??
I think that you SHOULDNT get your child christened. In time your child may have their OWN belief - then they can choose to be christened (or not).0 -
So your grandmother identified herself as RC. Your husband's family identify themselves as RC. You have no particular objection to this flavour of religion and have a degree of faith yourself.
Why not have the child Baptised as RC, then? It means there are plenty of people around who do know what it means, can provide the guidance if you see fit to have it, allows for the LO to be considered for entry into a RC school, etc.
My sister married a man whose family was very strongly RC. She refused to convert, but was happy (in the 1970s, when it was a big thing - and the Irish Troubles didn't help things) to marry in the RC church, to have their children baptised into the RC variety, go to RC schools and now, all those years later, both daughters work as teachers in RC schools, one is married to someone else who is RC and their children attend RC schools.
If you want to choose a particular flavour of religion, then to me, it seems the obvious choice.I could dream to wide extremes, I could do or die: I could yawn and be withdrawn and watch the world go by.Yup you are officially Rock n Roll

I have to add that I have been asked to be godmother a few times - and have always declined. The people asking have obviously failed to notice that I am NOT a christian!
I also noted that the people asking werent really christian themselves - they just paid lipservice to it and got the baby christened as it was 'the thing to do' and they wanted a party. I despise that - it makes a mockery of the religion. It may NOT be my religion, but I respect others beliefs if they are SINCERE! yours arent. you cannot 'honour' grandparents that way. you honour them by giving the kids their names - NOT their religion!0 -
Surely there is only one Religion you can be christened in? ............and that's Christianity .
Ok , I know I am being pedantic , but it does bug me when people refer to different churches as being different religionsVuja De - the feeling you'll be here later0 -

so you dont know that being christened Roman Catholic would not count in a Church of England? and to get married in COE you would have to convert and vice versa?
then there is Baptist, Presbeterian, and other offshoots. None of which impresses the Church of England!
my mum, at least had the sense not to get me christened - for which I thank her - but if she had, it wouldnt have made any difference. I chose my religion years ago and am very content - I dont even have to go through the hassle of converting!
I am Spiritualist - I dont have to do anything - except turn up when I feel like it! and I know that the Higher power doesnt need me to be in any particular place to pray or feel his/her prescence!
I dont need priest or vicars to intervene with GOD for me - i can communicate myself.
and the most important thing to me - I dont need anyone to die and atone for MY sins - I take full responsibility for them. and if there is any atoning to do - I will do it. and I will suffer the consequences if I dont. and I dont have to recite any chants or confess to someone who probably has committed worse sins than me!0 -
if your not that religious, why get them christened at all
im not christened and neither are any of my lot
not done us any harmIf we can put a man on the moon...how come we cant put them all there?

As i said I was being pedantic , the question was what religion should they be Christened in .........they are all the same religion ie Christianity
Actually you can get married in an RC church if one of you isnt a RC , and I got married in a CE church even though I had been 'christened ' a Baptist ( obviously they use a different term)
They are just different denominations of the same ReligionVuja De - the feeling you'll be here later0 -
If you don't believe then don't use the church for your own ends.
If you want to believe then speak to a priest or vicar (depending on your choice of church).
If you do believe then you wouldn't need to ask the question.:hello:0
