My DD who is now 8 is turning into a real keen reader, which delights me as I love reading.
Then my mind goes blank. What were your must reads as a child?
Thanks for your help
I'd second many of the suggestions made here. I was also a keen early reader, and read and loved the following in primary school:
The Wolves of Willoughby Chase and Blackhearts in Battersea and all the others in that series
Swallows & Amazons and the rest of the series, I particularly loved (and still do) Winter Holiday and Great Northern?
Narnia books by C S Lewis
Railway Children, and all the rest of her books
Carrie's War, and also The Peppermint Pig and others by Nina Bawden
Charlotte Sometimes by Penelope Farmer - an unusual and intriging children's story
The Green Knowe books by Lucy Boston
Charlotte's Web by E White
The Carbonel series by Barbara Sleigh
Rumer Godden's books - especially The Diddakoi and The Greengage Summer
Autumn Term et seq by Antonia Forrest
Ballet Shoes, The Circus is Coming, Curtain Up! and others by Noel Streatfeild
Al of !!!!!! King-Smith's books
The Worst Witch series by Jill Murphy
A Traveller in Time by Alison Uttley
Kipling - The Jungle Book, Kim, and Stalkey & Co
The Dark is Rising series by Susan Cooper...much enquiry having been made concerning a gentleman, who had quitted a company where Johnson was, and no information being obtained; at last Johnson observed, that 'he did not care to speak ill of any man behind his back, but he believed the gentleman was an attorney'.0 -
In my last year at primary school (probably not suitable until she's 10 or 11) I enjoyed Animal Farm, Jane Eyre, and Lord of the Flies....much enquiry having been made concerning a gentleman, who had quitted a company where Johnson was, and no information being obtained; at last Johnson observed, that 'he did not care to speak ill of any man behind his back, but he believed the gentleman was an attorney'.0

Re- Lord of the Flies. That was read to us by my English teacher when I started secondary school aged 12.0 -
I'm French, so was obviously reading in French at that age, but I have read pretty much all the ones suggested here too, so I agree with all the choices given. I will add Nobody's Boy, by Hector Malot, if you can find it! One of my absolute favourites when I was a kid.
Also, the John Flannagan series "Ranger's apprentice" are very good.0 -
Animal Farm, Charlottes Web & Anne of Green Gables - and the books that I remember from my childhood.. I have also re-read them as an adult!
My daughter is 9 and loves reading too - I really encourage her and take her to the library most weeks! Its a precious time!0 -
I had lots of Enid Blyton books - the naughtiest girl series, the faraway tree, the wishing chair to name a few.
I liked Judy Bloom books too when I was a bit older than 8.
Most of all I like my comics and annuals though, Topper, Buster, Bunty etc.1,2 & 5p: Christmas day food £9.31
10 & 20p: misc savings £2.70
50p: Christmas presents £3.50
£2: holidays £2.000 -

Lucky you - I've never found that one, nor Peter's Room....much enquiry having been made concerning a gentleman, who had quitted a company where Johnson was, and no information being obtained; at last Johnson observed, that 'he did not care to speak ill of any man behind his back, but he believed the gentleman was an attorney'.0 -
I loved The Borrowers, The Faraway Tree:D0

The book I read over and over at that age was The Neverending Story by Michael Ende. Still read it! Highly recommendedOne important thing to remember is that when you get to the end of this sentence, you'll realise it's just my sig.0

Ok im back again, I think my minds been turnng this over while ive slept as ive just remembered another series that my sister bought me a 3 in 1 of when I was about 9. I dont think I ever found or read all the books written but I loved the whole foreign boarding school, speaking different languages on different days etc (I actually asked my mum to send me to boarding school after reading St Clares, Naughtiest Girl and Malory Towers, she said no
)
anyway, where was I? oh yes, The Chalet School books. It starts with an older sister starting a small school that her younger sister (main character) attends and follows her through the school, into adulthood, marriage and her own kids. This is obviously across lots of books and if anyone ever spots any anywhre can they let me know as id love to read them again
