The twins at st Claires was one which me and my mum read together and Little Women is a must, I still read this now., but I also liked the Judy Blume books, but this might have been when I was a bit older (Im 40 now- so was a long time ago!) Anne of Green Gables was a good read as well!0

A couple I remember that haven't already been mentioned, The Siver Sword- Ian Serraillier and The Machine Gunners- Robert Westall. The Diddakoi by Rumer Godden was made in to a TV series in the 70's, and renamed Kizzy, I loved the TV series as a child, and it is now the reason my 22yr old daughter asks me why I gave her a "weird" name.

Another vote for Judy Blume here, do be careful though because she writes for younger kids, teens, and adults, so pick an age appropriate one - I remember my friends and I passing around a copy of "Forever" when I was younger and it's deffo not something I'd want my dd reading!!
Another great classic is Pippi Longstocking, I never read it when I was little but my two have loved the stories, and the Lauren Child edition is really beautifully illustrated

Your daughter will be the best judge if she can read something. I can remember when my sis and I started school in the UK. She had read every book on the reading list for her year group, so she started on the next years list. She was, and still is, an avid reader.0 -

My absolute favourite as a child which no one has mentioned yet is Gobbolino the Witch's Cat by Ursula Moray Williams. I read it at around the age of eight and it has stayed with me ever since.
I am a real animal-lover so as a child I also loved the Animals of Farthing Wood series by Colin Dann. He also wrote a large amount of other novels about animals - I still have the entire collection at my mum and dad's house as I can't bear to throw them away and hope that one day I'll have a child that loves reading as much as I do!
We read The Hobbit together at primary school, but it may be a bit long for your DD to read by herself.
I also loved horses so all the Jinny books and The Saddle Club series were big favourites. I was an avid reader as achild and devored everything i could get my hands on, around that age i loved all of Enid Blyton, famous 5, secret 7, malory towers, st clares, babysitters club, the saddle club, sweet valley twins (and when a bit older sweet valley high, then sweet valley university. I loved them!) Never really like Judy Blume but agree with a lot of the other classics.0

It just occured to me to suggest using the librarian's skills and knowledge too. My local library has a librarian whose interest is childrens's and teen's literature, who is brilliant at suggesting things if you tell her what books you've liked and disliked.

I can remember having a large book by Hans Christian Anderson with loads of stories in it had to be my favourite book as a child and l still think about it now. I haven't got it now though.

I love Enid Blyton too, Malory Towers was my favourite, the Famous 5 got on my nerves a bit but l still read them.
The Lion, The Witch and the Wardrobe another favourite, should read it again l can't remember anything about it now.
