I'm going to let my son type something up: I have installed this memory or RAM and it still says 2GB so i took a windows rating test and my RAM rating was still the same.

If you can help that will be awsome

Just take them both out and put them back in again, it sounds like one isn't fitted correctly.

Run CPU-Z on the laptop and take a look at the memory tab to see what is reported there and then to the SPD tab to take a look at what is in Slot 1 & 2 respectively.

    Hi

Yes, it has worked in so far as the memory is now being read. It now shows as 4gb.

Unfortunately, it hasn't made any difference in his games - they are still 'lagging'.

Apparently the frames per second needs to be higher. It has also not made any difference to his rating test. 3.5 before and is still the same. His games need a rating of 4.8.

Shall I start a new thread to see if anyone can help us?

    Many thanks

PS - the internet seems quite a bit faster

Obviously RAM was not the deciding factor.

CPU and Graphics are holding it back.

New thread won't help. Just don't have anything else running when trying to play games.

Eugh, cheap RAMm not a fan - I use Kingston or Crucial as I've had too many bad experiences with unknown brands.

If I'm looking at the right laptop, it's nearly 5 years old, so the graphics card will be rather dated now,. What games is he playing - is it new games he can;t run as well as expected or are existing games running more slowly? How does he connect to the Internet? What's your connection speed? Depending what he's playing and how, these can all have an impact on speeds.

The main thing I would say is that laptops are a poor choice for gaming - surte you can buy luxury laptops at a thousand quid with dedicated graphics, but they're difficult and expensive to upgrade. If he really wants to play the latest games, he'd be better off with a PC tower - initial outlay of maybe 600 pounds can get a machine that will last and also provide far more options for cheap upgrades.
