    Hi

I'm confused...... (what does this mean *)

Just done the crucial scan on son's laptop and it says he can have a total of 8gb* , ie 2 x 4gb.

    * Not to exceed manufacturers supported memory. (?)

The way I read the user manual is that the laptop can only have a total of 4gb memory. But the crucial scan says 8gb, then the asterick * .

    I've copied straight from the manual - can someone confirm whether I should order 2 x 2gb or 2 x 4gb?

    Copied from manual:

    Memory
Memory module connector two user-accessible SODIMM connectors
Memory module capacities 512 MB, 1 GB, 2 GB
Memory type 667 MHz SoDIMM DDR2
    Minimum memory 1 GB
    Maximum memory 4 GB
NOTE: In order to take advantage of the dual channel bandwidth capability, both
memory slots must be populated and must match in size.
NOTE: The available memory displayed does not reflect the complete maximum
memory installed because some memory is reserved for system files.

Bear in mind that unless you are running a 64 bit version of Windows, then the OS will only recognise 3.5GB of RAM anyway.
If the max is 2GB per slot, then you can only have 4GB in total. And you just need to add a matchng RAM module, not replace the existing 2GB one and buy another one.
No free lunch, and no free laptop ;)

OK, so how do I tell what bit version of Windows is running.

And what is a RAM module?

Sorry for so many questions, just have to get this sorted for my son today.

    Many thanks

Go Computer>right click>Properties>General tab. What is the OS shown?
If 64 bit is not specified, then it is running a 32 bit OS.
A RAM module or chip is the part you need to physically install to increase the RAM.

The Ram has been delivered and my son followed the instructions on you tube.

His computer is still only showing 2gb of RAM - shouldn't it show as 4GB now. This was under computer, right click and properties.

    Many thanks
