Bad news guys
When Alan went down to theatre yesterday, the surgeon expected a routine 1 1/2 hours clean out of infection and fit a drain to get rid of the fluid, but, he just happened to look behind a tube and ................................ found a large hard lump on the back of Alan's larger bowel, which is a tumour and has spread to his liver, which had a few lesions too. So his routine op turned into 4 1/2 hour complicated surgery to remove the tumour and the whole back of the larger bowel and the lesions from the liver. He couldn't stitch the bowel back up as not enough left so Alan now has a 'bag' which is permanentThe tissue removed has been sent to pathology for analysis and the consultants will be meeting next Thursday to discuss treatment and prognosis, but they have said it is very bad, and uncurable
When I went over today to see him, he was on a drip and strong antibiotics, plus patient controlled morphine - he presses a button when the light comes on every 4 minutes to administer morphine. He is remaining positive but does know what is involved. He said, having helped others through their cancer, that he could lie there sobbing and yelling 'Why me?' but that won't make any difference to the facts. He has bowel cancer which has spread to the liver, it is Stage IV, and uncurable. Chemo can make halt or slow the growth/spread of the cancer and extend his life, but that is all, and he is going to face it full on
Added to this, the van overheated as I got the the hospital so I just had to pull onto the grass, and when I came out I had a £40/£80 parking ticket private company. I limped the van to the nearest garage but when I put water in, it poured out the bottom again as a hose had gone, so I called breakdown who said they would be there within 60 minutes, but took 95 mins. Guy refitted and tightened hose so I got home
I have spent most of the night texting and talking on the phone but have yet to tell Alan's familythat will be tomorrow now as I am exhausted. I am at the vets at 9am for pup Molly's first injections, then calling at car boot/cafe to let them know about Alan as we have very close friends there. Will go over to see him again at 2 pm and the McMillan Nurse is coming to see us re financial and other help when I am there
Thanks for all the messages and support guys, it does help and is much appreciated by us both. However, Beanie has her own troubles at the moment as her Dad has died, so condolances Beanie, and lots of (((hugs))) for you :AMr 3Dogs 3-7-12

Yes thanks Aesop, that's why I put 'private parking' - will sort it out during the week - no rush I hope - but definitely not paying it
By the way, the doctor confirmed that Alan's Bowel Cancer/Liver lesions are not connected to his Grade I Superficial Bladder Cancer in December 2007, not is it connected to the appendicitis or the infection from the op. Also, he just had the all clear from routine bowel cancer tests for over 60's in January. It must have been building up for about 2 years to get to the stage it is at, and has only been found now by chanceMr 3Dogs 3-7-12

I had a couple of whiskeys, yes a couple no more, last night before I went to bed, Molly winged for just a minute and then went to sleep in her cage. she woke me with a very little winge about 5 am so I got up and she had a wee, just missing the puppy pad;), I went to the loo, put her back in her cage and got back into bed and she went straight back to sleep
I had another couple of hours sleep and am up now ready to take her for her injections. I have just rang the hospital and Alan is doing ok. They said that the doctors will be around after 9am so to ring baack later

I rang the ward at 8.30 am and they said to ring back after doctors did their rounds, which I have just done. Alan had been up briefly for a wash but was back in bed now and sound asleep. Looking forward to seeing him at 2 pm and will pass on all your good wishes
Our friend Jenny is going to see him tonight
I took Molly for her 1st vacinations at 9 am and did the Puppy Pack which means your get her 2 sets of injections, microchipping which will be done at second appointment, and first worming and flea treatment which was done today. This costs £61 but got 10% off due to my Healthy Paws VIP plan making it £54.90. It would have been just less than £40 just for the injections, less 10%, so this is a good saving. Molly behaved impecably but did squeal when the needle went in, though that was soon forgotten
I then called to tell a few close friends about Alan, which is the hardest part I've done so farMr 3Dogs 3-7-12
