Thanks for all your kind replies. I think I'll just stick to novelty type or charity presents rather than wasting time and money looking for something he'll like.

But if he doesn't want the novelty, surely that's wasting time and money anyway?

I would defo look at maybe giving some money to charity at least they'll be thankful and maybe he genuinely doesn't like getting presents so this would be ideal.
Forty and fabulous, well that's what my cards say....

    A bottle of whisky?
  • I always thought anything with a alcohol content or some mould culture was a standard dad present?

I bought my dad a novelty xmas tie a few times but generally stick to the Port and Cheese combo.

Why not buy something that your mum would like as well so when he gives it away you know it will be appreciated.
    Man plans and God laughs...
Perhaps travel cannot prevent bigotry. But by demonstrating that all people cry, laugh, eat, worry and die, it introduces the idea that if we try to understand each other, we may even become friends.
  • The in laws are a bit like this, they've been quite ungrateful about stuff we've bought them or told me they'd returned it. So I don't put any thought into it at all now and just buy them vouchers for the garden centre/bookshop/theatre/cinema. I do buy them their favourite treats - marzipan and toffees as well but often they say they can't have them as they're on a cut down - !!!!!!! they're late 70s, neither of them is overweight, why not enjoy eating and drinking exactly what you want, they're pretty boring.

My parents on the other hand are really good about presents, my mum would be happy just with the box of marshmallow domes we get her from Lidl as her treat.
    Over futile odds
And laughed at by the gods
    And now the final frame

  • Hi
Ok so my dad is IMPOSSIBLE to buy for - no hobby etc loves Jaffa cakes - so gets socks, jaffa cakes, cheese boards etc I got board with this - he was never rude I may add - but had a draw full of shirts, dvd's he never watches etc. So I bought £25 of scratch cards - it's the amount i'd usually spend. Hey presto - loved it - gave him a chance to win some cash - not as crude as just giving him it.

I wouldn't accept rudeness just because he's old though - i'd let him know how hurtful he's being and the not giving him a gift is always a good idea or just asking

Wrap up an empty box, then tell him he really is moaning about nothing.

Well one year for an ungrateful relative I got an empty box filled it with poly chips wrapped it up in nice paper and put a bow on it and when they opened it and found nothing inside barring poly chips I just said that there was no point in looking for anything for you as you will moan about anything I choose to buy you.
  • thank you all for your great ideas, my dad is exactly the same, so i am going to get him a novelty lump of coal, as there is nothing else i can think of, he dosent drink, eat sweets, no hobbies, too many photographs, ornaments, 'year you were born' type things,
moans at my efforts too, i didnt realise it was probably embarrassment,
he too is a wonderful father, but i believe had no presents at all growing up with 12 siblings in the 1930's, hardly surprising really..

"Dad, you never appreciate any of the gifts I get you so what can I get you that you WONT turn your nose up at?"

Seriously, I wouldn't put up with that from my Dad, there's no need for rudeness. I would tell him straight that he is being an ungrateful, grumpy git, it might wake him up a bit - bit of honesty won't hurt in this situation ;)

If all else fails - I'd opt for a gift voucher.
