I still think it is a little tight of the company not to pay the expense of the trial especially as is only 10 bob, but I've seen far worse! Sometimes you have to put up with crap to get on. This is one of those moments
Maybe you're not old enough to know but 10 bob is 50 pence in new money. You mean 10 quid!
  • The firm are idiots for doing this because the only candidates likely to be willing to do a trial day are those who are currently unemployed and otherwise doing nothing. Someone in current employment is not going to give up a day of their precious annual leave for such a trial, even if they can get the particular day off from their current job. This means that the firm are less likely to employ someone who is currently employed, who would tend to be the better candidates.

This is not quite the same as an assessment centre, often aimed at graduates and school leavers with little track record to go on.

Would I do a trial day? Yes, if I was unemployed and desperate. As I'm currently employed, no I wouldn't. Simples.

    It was an insult?

The company was for a supplier I used to deal with at my last job and the job was a new role they created by spliting one job into two & it was only posting 700 invoices a month and reconciling the statements and at my last job I did the following:

Coding invoices & posting to Agresso (approx 1500 a month)
    · Coding & posting logistics invoices against orders
    · Posting petty cash expenditure & raising payment
    · Posting prepayment & capital invoices
    · Monthly, quarterly & year end supplier statement reconciliation
    · Issuing cheque payments for all companies in the Group
    · Monthly Invoice/stock comparisons
    · Dealing with suppliers both by letter and on the telephone
    · New supplier & supplier amendment documentation
    · Dealing with all the Utility Bills for 43 sites & updating the Utility spreadsheet.
    · Managing the EURO invoices & EURO payments

    · Intrastat entries with HM Revenue and Customs
    · Running a twice monthly BACS run for 3 companies approx £1,000,000 per month
    · Coding & posting to system of all company expenses
    · Ad hoc duties including filing, audit queries
    · Problem solving

Why are people so aggressive on this forum?

The OP would have liked some genuine advice, unfortunately she was haranged, insulted and bullied for asking a simple question.

I really dont understand the attitude on here.:(

    Read her other posts.

She has an attitude problem and it is most likely the reason that she has been unemployed for such a long time.

So, give her some genuine advice then.

    Lady A,

I do think that its a bit of a cheek to expect you to do a days work for nothing but its perhaps a sign of the times that they feel able to do this.

Unless I had something else to do that day, I think I would give it a go and see what happened. If they just try to give you a load of work and treat you like dirt you can always walk out. But maybe they just want to assess how you do certain tasks and whether you fit in. Suppose after the interview they had asked you to demonstrate you could do certain tasks in practice, would you have said only if you pay me? I guess it depends if you really want the job.

It completely can in written word. Just as it does in written word here. What you think is an achievement, what you think obstacles to overcome were, how you describe reasons for leaving.

Haven't seen yours so don't know if it does. But it can.
