  • I did a work trial day back in June I didn't expect to be paid, I was just happy I got that far at the time. All worked out and they gave me the job and turned out to be the best company I have ever worked for. You should borrow the £10 it could work out for you.

No but you did say I wasn't as good as I thought I was & that's why I have been out of work so long so therefore I must be a moron in your eyes

I wish you all the luck in the world with your life!

CAN SOMEONE PLEASE CLOSE THIS THREAD AS THERE IS NO WAY OF DELETING IT?

That seems to be your opinion of someone who perhaps over-values their abilities.

Most of us would probably think it was just someone who was not perceived by others in the same light as their own and would not make a "moron" judgment.

If the trial meant id have a chance of a job at the end then yes id do it, what have you got to lose ? show enough enthusiasm and willing and the job could yours.

Personally, I don't think that anyone who is out of work is a moron. I would reserve that judgement for someone who actually has a chance of getting a job and refuses that chance because they are "worth more" than doing a one day work trial to prove they are the right person for the job. After all, it isn't actually as if they are worth more - right now they are worth, per day, 1/7th of their JSA allowance for the week, and can't scrape together £10. And with this attitude they may never be worth any more than that.

But this doesn't entirely surprise me since the OP's history is fascinating. The seem to believe every !!!! and bull story some manager/employer/person they know tells them and trot it out on threads here as if it is bibilcal truth, even when it is proven they are wrong. And when called on it, say they are going away and will never post here again. And every single time they end up falling back on the "you obviously all think I am stupid" line to win sympathy for their own poor attitude.

Why on earth bother coming and asking the question if you don't want the obvious answer? Did you genuinely think that people would be lining up to say "You have a real chance of a job after being out of work for a long time and the employer has the audacity to ask you to do a work trial - how utterly unreasonable of them, tell them where to go, after all there are dozens more jobs waiting for you".

Ok not been on here for a while but I have a question so I could get some opinions:

Applied for an accounts job at a big hotel group where I provided a CV, references and had to answer some questions online like 'what does excellent hospitality mean to you'? and 'who do you admire the most'? etc

Anyway I was shortlisted with only 3 others for a telephone interview with the HR team who asked the usual HR questions and some others like 'why shouldn't I put you forward for the next stage' to which I told her WHY she should!

Ok cut a long story short 2 weeks later I got a face to face interview with the head of accounts and the general manager of the hotel. I was told they would make a decision in a week when they had seen the other person.

5 days passed and I got an invite to a trial day. I asked if this trial day meant I had the job and they said no it was in no way a job offer (I guess both people are doing the trial day) and it was too see if they thought I could do the job (surely my 20 years exp can tell them that already and the references I have) and how well I interact with the team.

It will be at my expense and they will get £100 of work out of me for no pay plus there is no offer of the job here and I have no idea if I was to be offered the job after all this what the hours are, pay or benefits etc.

    Would you do it?

I went to a work trial a few months that I was told at the interview would be paid. I work for 5 hours and the company were not professional and they did not even bother to let me know whether I got the job.

I had to call and write to them a number of times to get my pay for the day. At the time I was unemployed and need the job I did not have money for travel so had to borrow it to get to the trial. I only went to the trial because it was paid and I wanted the job.
I would never do a work trial again because I saw that company was doing it to everyone that applied to work there to get them to work for free. I totally understand why the op does not want to go to the trial and be treated like a slave.

My current job hired me base on my CV and experience and never asked me to do a work trial.

My brother was recently made redundant after just 6 months so got no payout. He took on temporary agency work to cover the bills. He found two posts he wished to apply for and had to be interviewed by various people and do presentations resulting in him needing 7 days off work over a 3 week period. Therefore he was unable to claim any money despite having those days off. His agency work wasn't everyday or even full days and he risked looking unreliable to the agency by being unavailable on days he was being interviewed.

He's working now on £50k plus bonuses and perks. Not bad for for someone with no qualifications, it must be his attitude and work ethic that does it.

You should tailor your CV to each job rather than have one standard one.

    I'll resist adding anything further.
  • Unless it's changed (which it may have) you used to be able to claim travel expenses from the Job Centre for interviews etc. I would definitely do it!

I hope you don't communicate like this in real life.

    Tailor CV to the job.

I saw on another thread that you had been unemployed for 67 weeks. Do you want to be looking back in another 67 weeks time thinking I wonder what would have happened if I'd gone on that work trial?
