Ive heard the saying 'name changed by deed poll' - but what does that mean?

If you dont want to do it online or through a solicitors, is there any other way - like through the local Registry Office?

You used to be able to download forms online, I had the link on my old computer and would give you the link if I still had it.

Basically a deed is simply a legal instrument in a prescribed form signed and witnessed (the need for a seal has long been abolished, though many deeds still have seals as symobic references). So if you do a bit of googling, you might be able to find it. I think that the form I found was on a site hosted by Lord Richard of Bradford, if that helps.

    Good luck!

If you have it done by deed poll by a solicitor it means that you can no longer use any previous names..
I.e. if your name is fred blggs and you change it to reg smith, you can no longer legally call yourself fred bloggs although when applying for credit or official forms you still have to put down "previous names".

SO can someone popint me in the right direction - I ve volunteered to look into it as I thought it was a simple phone call.

If I type DEED POLL into Google, I get a hundred 'deed poll' companies offering to to it for £10-£15-£20 etc.

What is the the PROPER/TRADITIONAL way to do it and to ensure you get all the necessary letters/certificates/deeds etc?

All my kids names changed ti my married through a solicitor via deed poll, we got about 4 copys of each deed poll to pass on to schools, doctors ect and a main certified copy which we have used for getting their passports change over ect.
Most places didnt even want a copy or to see it apart from the doctors who needed it to get new medical cards issued.

Can I ask how much it cost to do?

I went to solicitors they usually do 1/2 hour free consultation, it costs us about a hundred quid, we got a nice booklet with free copies of our change of name deeds, it was all really easy and straightforward.

I went to a solicitor and changed my 2 daughters surnames to mine instead of their dads for £25 each. He said i also had to put a notice in the local paper along the lines of "as of whatever date name would like to be known as name".
