Changing a childs name -Help needed.

You don't need to pay to have this done, all you need to do is draw up the document yourself (plenty of examples on the 'net or in a law book at your library) and then get someone to countersign it like your GP etc ... same sort of person that would be accepted to countersign your passport. Obviously a GP/Solicitor might charge you a small fee for their time but you should be able to find someone who won't

If I type DEED POLL into Google, I get a hundred 'deed poll' companies offering to to it for £10-£15-£20 etc.
What is the the PROPER/TRADITIONAL way to do it and to ensure you get all the necessary letters/certificates/deeds etc?
Hi there, took me ages finding your post, whatever it's called. Anyway, in answer to your question for deed polls, go to; https://www.kingnicholas.com/namechanges/-23k
It is totally free, and if you have a printer you can print stright away. You just need a witness to sign, trim top and bottom, where you get the site listed etc, and there you have it. It is not nessacery, however, advisory, to accompany it with a letter from your doctor, stating that they have known you in your previous name, and your new name.
GOOD LUCK!!! p.s; I've trawled every site for months now, and this is the best solution!0 -
You don't have to go via deed poll to change your name, you can simply do so by usage, you simply change your name and advise all that you have done so, so long as you are only using one name and do not deny your previous identity and there is no unlawful reason behind your doing so.Four guns yet only one trigger prepare for a volley.Together we can make a difference.0

Agree with Ben-usage does determine the name used-my daughter has done this with no problem. If you want to make it more official you can do it yourself via the magistrates court.Ring the courts and they'll tell you what you need. As I remember they need a small fee and your birth certificate and then you have to swear that this is the name you want to be known by. It is -as far as I am aware -accepted by the DVLA, passport authorities etc.0

My parents, when I was just past the age of changing the birth certificate, decided that they not only had spelt my surname wrong - but wanted to change the spelling of my first name too!!! They just told everyone who needed it how to spell my names the preferred way and that's how it is. the only places that have the original spelling of my first name now are the doctor and passport office. Got married, so surname not an issue. Even the DVLA use the preferred spelling. It does make Child protection check forms a bit of a nuisance though (volunteer childrens worker and nurse, so need them regularly).

My daughters have been known under my husbands surname for almost 6 years with no problems, However my eldest daughter is almost 16 now and wants to get her own bank account for her EMA award to be put into but the bank wont allow her to open an account in her assumed name without evidence of a deed poll.
I recently paid £9.99 for an online deed poll. I have found free deed polls online but these seem to be aimed at 18 yrs plus (you need someone with parental responsibility for a child under 16 and this means slightly different wording on the deed poll) If they are over 16 but under 18 then a parent needs to apply for permission but the child has to agree to it.0 -
Not sure if this is in the right place.,but here goes!My stepson was born with the surname williams(changed) but his father walked out at 6 months old and although he saw him for the first few years he hasn`t seen him now for nearly 9 years and he has taken on my surname.Anyway he`s 16 now and needs his own bank account which understandably he doesn`t want in his original surname. My question is how easy is it to change names by deed poll?I`ve seen many people offering the service on the internet for as little as £5 but what is the legality of this? Thanks in Advance.

I found the wording for a deed poll myself, printed it out on good, thick cream paper (like the sort you would get it done on by a solicitor), had it witnessed by 2 friends and have had no problem with doing it this way. It no longer has to be officially "sealed" legally, and I have since applied for a new passport, changed driving licence, etc - in fact everything requiring id was changed. I was going to pay a firm via the internet around £35/£40 to do it, but some of them would simply email the wording to you to print yourself & have witnessed!!! So I did it the mse way for free!!
I know that some of the websites have good FAQ & information pages so you can do some background reading - I think once a child reaches 16 they can change their name without the father's permission but you should be able to look that up via the FAQs.Live your life until love is found, or love's gonna get you down" (credit to Mika!)
