Once you have read the books - if there are any you don't want to keep, have you considered selling them on amazon or swapping them on green metropolis?
I hadn't considered selling? Hmmm. There's a thought. I tend not to keep my fiction anyway unless I absolutely love it. Don't know green metropolis...off to google!

Remoska hasnt got a thermostat, it either goes on, or it goes off. I like it cos its simple
Are you going to try cauliflower in that?:rotfl::rotfl:I was so glad I didn't have a mouthful of anything when I saw your pressure cooker post. Cauliflower 5-10 mins in boiling water (depends how crunchy you like it) Into dish topped with cheese sauce. Grill until bubbling.

On topic??!! Today's headline: "Inflation hits record 5.2%" - mainly due to energy prices. I am definitely no economist, but this would say to me that we're all better off following GQ's example and investing our hard earned pennies in tinned tomatoes and suchlike.
The scariest thing to me about all this is that nobody, least of all the politicians (or their 'advisors') seem to have a clue what to do about it. It's as if this financial crisis is a wild animal: completely unpredictable, dangerous, destructive. Does anyone have the training manual?
I don't think there is one, it's all seat of the pants stuff. Worrying that inflation is usually caused by rapid growth which we have zilch of at the moment.
The traditional cure is raising interest rates!! That would kill anyone with debt or a mortgage. Onwards with the penny pinching and a-scrimping then, doubling my efforts now!

I have just had an email letting me know that my local fire & rescue service, in partnership with Age UK and Trading Standards, will be carrying out free testing of electric blankets at local fire stations over the next week or so. It also says that "subject to availability, the Fire Service will replace, free of charge, any electric blanket they deem unsafe". This seems like a great service to me - maybe it's happening in other areas too?

Sure they'll fit under the bed. One at each corner. You might be a little closer to the ceiling is all. And woe betide you if you use just one at a time.
Last time I was inundated with tomatoes, I made a rather good tomato tart. Plain pastry base, large tin of tomatoes, 1 onion, little salt, vinegar and sugar, reduced to a paste, and spread on then baked. Good hot or cold. You really really have to cook off the tomatoes well though, or you get a baked soggy mess.
Excellent, up the stairs to bed and up the step ladder into bed :rotfl:
I will add the tart to the things to do when I open a tin. :T
Does anyone here use Calor in cylinders? The cost of those seems to have rocketed in the last year as well and you are so tied in for suppliers.0 -
Pleeeease come back everyone, all your posts are valued especially by this oftentimes lurker! (((hugs))) all round and if that fails how about my fav pick me up? a :coffee: and a double helping of:EasterBun:EasterBun
Just had a de caff and a choc eclair (it fell into my trolley honest!) actually feel a little sick now so serves me right! My excuse it that now dh has finally started to worry about his job, money, mortgage etc., I'm more worried than ever! It's taken me ages to get him on board and the reality of him finally taking it all seriously is somewhat disturbing!:) Our big plan is to overpay on the mortgage to reduce the payments and hope the interest rates don't go up anytime soon! We are tied in for another 4 years so that helps for now. Been saving my wages from a little cleaning job I have and anything else I can scrape together ready for an over payment.
Greyqueen the sc will help you so much, energy wise as well as financially. Looking forward to reading about your slow cooking experiences!
Softstuff loving the posts on your home made Christmas and your recipes!
Flowertotmum just love your posts and wish I had been so wise when my kids were littlies!
Taurus keeping my fingers crossed for you re the op and agree with Elona - rest up as much as you can. The year I went into hospital for a major op just before Christmas was the best Christmas ever! I was so organised, everything bought, made and wrapped or frozen so dh could sort it out where necessary. Mind you it has never happened since!:o
Dumpy I bought a couple of the large tins of toms and bulk cooked up some spaghetti sauce in the sc, freezing it into takeaway containers, just right for a pizza or pasta bake and so much nicer than the jars.
brain fog kicking in now so apologies if I have missed somebody

I need to butt in here. I don't post that often, and very often forget to thank a post I like/agree with.
However, I'm not in a clique either here or in rl, and welcome posts from all sorts. I'm no spring chicken so I might know things that some of the younger ones don't. Some of the younger ones are needed to kick me out of the little rut my thinking gets into.
For this thread to be successful and helpful, it needs input from ALL types of people of ALL ages and persuasions (and some people have got some very strange persuasions I've noticed).
Sometimes I'm on here a lot, and sometimes I skim read to keep up because rl won't let me sit down and play. Occasionally if I don't much care for the tone of the way things are being discussed, I back off for a bit. It always comes back to the thread that I think we all need, now more than ever.
So this is an appeal from an occasional poster - I, and many more, need you to keep nattering.

Well morning ladies and gents..its a lovely bright day here, bit windy and chilly but sunny...got some woolies on the line..hope they get dry...
I have to say that Kimsmum's post on the little girl the other day really touched me to the point of tears..my own tot asked me why and i explained that some children do not have any toys and that even though mummy and daddy love them they just don't have any money to buy them...i didn't think at 5 she would get it..but last night she surprised me and sorted out her toys and teddies and asked me to take them to the CS so other children could have them and play with them..o it made me cry..how grown up of her..and the bag included some of her favourites too..so today i am properly de-cluttering the toy room...they want to keep the toy kitchens and bits..the supermarket tills..some dollies,2 pushchairs and 2 tea-sets..the rest they have said can go...i am soo proud of her..so the CS is going to get about 10 bags of toys and games plus books...
How amazing is she..so thoughtful..so whilst on holiday next wk i am going to get her a little something..not sure what but something to say "thank you"..
I love this thread..please keep posting for us all..you are all like the big sisters i never had..full of love, life and laughter,wisdom...i share you pain and laughter..please don't leave.
Totally fed up with DC..plonker..maybe he should get his head out the clouds and come live in the real world for a while and let him worry about bills, food, clothes etc..something i suspect he has never had to do..he is so pompous, would love to skelp him:D..
Right have to go got lots to do and still not enough hours in my day..
love you all

Ooooh, that is SO lovely. Shows you've bought your kids up proper like. You should be so proud (and I'm sure you are).

What's going on with the thread at the moment is completely normal thread "behaviour" - on all forums there are periods of community/togetherness/upset/offence, etc, etc. It also happens more on threads like this where you get folk in all sorts of circumstances contributing. If your thread is about the nesting habits of the lesser-striped umpty bird there will be less upset - although even there the discussion about moss or feathers as the best nesting material might cause a furore  People will find their own comfort level, drift out and back, and the thread will march on.
So, on topic, I've just proved there's always a bit more you can do. Now I'm single my water consumption has reduced and my direct debit has gone from £54 to £21 - well it did for one month but now they want £26. There's no financial incentive for paying by direct debit so I decided to cancel it - I take readings every month so know what the bill is going to be anyway. Looked on the website for a contact number and found instead a tariff for low users - and I fit the criteria :T. Got it changed and will save about £50 a year, just on the water! Well happy
So, keep on the lookout for opportunities to save, drink more tea, eat more chocolate/sweeties and don't let the you-know-whats grind you down.
