    Afternoon Everyone, oldies and newbies!

Lovely sunny morning now turned grey and threatening rain. But middle-sized mountain of branches reduced to constituent parts, and a big space cleared ready to build a humungous log pile on. Neighbour (92!) has ordered a log splitter, and asked if we want to go halves, so as soon as it comes we can start to process all the big stuff.

So crackered again but very pleased we only have the huge branch mountain left to tackle :T.

I also now have a bed cleared of logs that I could plant up with veg - can any one advise me of what can go in at this time of year?

Had a busy day - make my most frugal soup - pea and mint - it has to be the cheapest soup going but lovely and hearty. Two loaves of bread and a bramble and apple crumble - probably the last as with the torrential rain the brambles are blown. WCS

Westcoastcot, Pea and mint soup sounds lovely. Do you mind sharing the recipe?

I have just been given at least 20 various types of fresh chillies. What's the best way to store them to make them last as long as possible?

Also, been given a bag of fresh tomatoes, I think I will have cheese and tomato sandwiches all week.

    Afternoon everyone :)

I'm feeling wiped out today and have a tickle in my throat that wasn't there yesterday. I swear if DH has passed on his viral infection I am going to whack him with the big frying pan. DH, DS1 and DS2 are all on hols next week, so I can't be ill.
Everyone liked the fish pie last night, even the non fish eaters. Even better I managed to resist the cookie ice cream sandwiches :D So I'm now on day 16 without cake, sweets, chocolate, biscuits or any other sugar based goodies. On November 1st I'm planning on filling the cake stand I won on October 1st with cakes and shortbread and eating the lot.
Now I'm going to dose myself up with lemsip and comfort food in the form of a fishfinger sandwich.
I promise to comment on everyone's posts when I can do them justice
    Take care xxxxxxxx

Oh Kimsmum - you are a star. THat little girl will always remember that. I still can't bear to see naked dollies - they make me feel cold. Was forever dressing the ones DD left abandoned. :o

Cranky40 - well done you for being such a great mum and to help your son with his loss. My BIL died last year and the kids have actually been better behaved since he went as his (mental) illness affected the whole family.

Well, i have been for a run to get rid of some energy and get some vit D into me in the hope i will work better (says she typing away on this thread :rotfl:)
I wanna be in the room where it happens

Garlic! The easiest thing to grow ... just remember to keep it well watered next spring when the bulbs are swelling - oh, and plant it on little mounds if you have very heavy soil, which helps them to avoid rotting if they get waterlogged. I'm sure there are lots of other things too, but my veg-growing skills are rather rusty at the moment. Fresh garlic is lovely - sweet and mellow. HTH, the cake
  • Becky 2, re chillies. I found they don’t keep that long in their natural state in the fridge, went mouldy , lot a waste. What I do now is chop them up finely and open freeze in little silicone cases, like petit four cases, a teaspoon worth to a case, ice cube tray would work too. When frozen I tip them out, bag them up, bag for green bag for red, and use as required, so I always have chillies to hand. The lumps can disintegrate a little, and I can break them up a bit more if needed.

This works for my bog standard chilli buys, and you could keep the varieties separate. Hopefully someone has better experience and advice for storing them in their fresh state as you have such a variety, in case freezing them loses any of their individual character.

I am very wary of the DM duvet deal too, although i havent tried the M&S value ones- how much is it for a double from there, and are they decent (as opposed to being filled with air as most cheap ones)?

Wouldnt have thought there would be that much to choose between cheapest Marks & Sparks duvets and anyone else's Value/Basics/etc ones?? Probably not much in it - whoever they are bought from.

I have both "levels". I've got a cheap-as-chips duvet (single variety - bought from either Argos or Woolworths) and a "standard" range duvet "set" from Marks & Spencers. The cheap-as-chips one has been bought specifically to wrap round myself whilst sitting round to save on heating and the "standard" range "set" was bought for use as duvets (ie on my bed).

They are obviously very different - I wouldnt want to use the cheap one as bedding - because, to me, its so cheap, flimsy, lightweight - and does the job fine for what I bought it for (ie a cover-up when sitting around) - but my "standard" ones as bedding are lovely/wrap-round/more "substantial".

Horses for courses I would say IMO.

    TECHNICAL QUERY:
I've often noticed its possible to edit posts later on MSE without the smallprint coming up at the end of the post saying that its been edited at such and such a time and it just looks as if thats how that particular post always was, as I've spotted various posts over recent months that have changed from the "original" later, but theres no sign they were amended.

Can anyone spell out to techno-thickie moi how to do so too please?
  • It only works that way if you immediately edit a post without changing your page, Ceridwen. You also don't need to complete the'reason for edit'
Like this, I posted then clicked edit immediately.
